I really liked them with wings, it gives them a more "swarmie" touch. But some more minor detailing on those without and they will be fine too. Perhaps give the zerglings wings after the ms upgrade?

I like the wings because it shows that the zerg are constantly evolving and changing. In my mind, the wings aren't for flying, but more for balance. I dunno.

Wings all the way. Probably because in my mind zerglings aren't vertebrates but rather insects so the wings make a lot of sense, especially when paired with the evolution mentality and how it serves them to run in tight packs.

Also I like the idea of massed winglings causing clutter. It makes the unit unique in making focusfiring at them that little bit harder, and also makes them more intimidating.

Now that Karune's confirmed the wings will be Metabolic Boost visual upgrade, it's good to have the old raptors back :)

I liked how they hopped around with the wings, reminded me of a locust swarm.

    Back to the wings!
how about an upgrade that allows the zergling to morph wings? (Like the Lurker aspect upgrade)
    then they can fly...
imagine a swarm of zerglings just trashing a group of vikings
viking pilot: Wtf zerglings in the air?
2nd pilot: do we...do we shoot them?
3nd: It looks like their gonna attack us...i guess so.
    *they shoot at the zerglings*
a moment later they die ^^

The title was awfully familiar but I thought I was going mental. Either way, gassy knows how to search so I'm assuming the original thread was lost.

I didn't bother searching, actually. Opinions change as time goes, and now with official pics (like... pics or it didn't happen) and a year or a half behind us I didn't think we'd have the same discussion all over again :D

And I'd like to think that the current purpose of this thread is to make people aware of that Blizzard are making upgrades that affect visuals, aside from the Marine shield.

I was actually kind of hoping wings would mean the zergling would be the zerg cliff jumper (down even if not back up) kinda imba probably :D

You are (as always) right. We are the "old" who have to teach the "new" :)

If the lore for giving them wings is good, then what the hell, give them wings. But that hopping... Insects with wings do not hop. Of course, zerglings are no insects, but still, it is the theme of the race. As for giving them wings after a speed upgrade, why would they go faster because of that? Wings are for flying, not for running. Do they sometimes smoke something funny at blizzard before they go brainstorming?

Zerglings basically hopped in StarCraft1, it's only that they had a smooth, constant speed.

And wings can be used for stability as well. For example, look at what any bird does when it runs. Wings don't only serve one purpose. And besides, who's to say that the Zerglings' wings don't act like spoilers?

I like the hopping, but not on a creature with wings. Lots of birds can run. And the Zergling runs or hops on 4 legs. I highly doubt that wings would bring any extra speed or stability. Its body is pretty earodynamic already. Wings would only create more drag if they are not properly folded against the body, which they are not. As for the wings acting like spoilers: why would you want something that keeps you to the ground when your body is designed to jump? -assuming you are talking about spoilers as on a car- Pointless if you ask me.

Lots of birds can run, yes, and lots do, and when the sprint, they hold their wings out for stability.

As for being aerodynamic, it's impossible to judge. Yes, they're streamlined, but they've also got everything poking out everywhere. Thinking of it in that regard, the wings could practically help reduce drag, actually making the Zergling even more streamlined.

And spoilers help by keeping traction with the ground. When going at massive speeds, it would help them keep stable.

They could also help with speed as well, not in the sense that the wings buzz like a fly's or anything, but in the sense that kicking helps when swimming, or like how a prawn has both walking and swimming legs.

Mayby we should go to the korprulu sector and put some zerglings into a wind tunnel. :p But you are probably right. I think that I suffered a bit of tunnel vision there. And if you forget all of the drag and streamline stuff, what looks most natural to you: a creature with wings that never flies, or a creature without wings that just hops and runs around. I would choose that last one.
