That would mean that the swarm could still be controlled if all overlords on a planet are assimilated. So, mutas, guardians, brood lords, scourges and other flying breeds would still be able to attack the cubes. Of course, overlords would need to be produced en masse to compensate for the losses, so that would take a toll on the zerg production facilities.

How exactly are flying zerg not affected by overlords?

Still, can a zerg attack really break through an army of borg cubes, where a single cube can take on a whole fleet in star trek? I actually would love to see zerg win here, but the borg just seem so imba. No wonder they didn't use them much in the series. >_<

I mean that Kerrigan can take control if the overlords are incapacitated, at least for a while.

Well, fleets in star trek are rather small, so no one is really prepared to fight any large number of separate entities, which is where the zerg excel. Both fights against the borg were among the largest ever, with neither totalling more than a hundred ships. Furthermore, the ships are all large and cumbersome, with very few species using anything other than cruisers and capital ships (star trek is kinda weird for an sf setting in that regard), so most ships are designed for assaulting largest shielded individuals, not small agile swarms.

Ah, ofc! The borg don't have any small fighters, do they?

nah. I think the smallest standard vessel they use is the sphere, which still has a crew of a few hundred. IIRC there are spheres, cubes and armored cubes, although that last one was only seen in unimatrix zero, and makes little sense (mostly because if there were specialized combat cubes, why not use them during the battle of Worf-### or First contact?)

Would the Borg even know that the overlords are something special and a priority for assimilation? The assimilation of any other Zerg strain would not tell them anything about it as uncontrolled Zerg are less than feral.

I assume they'd try to assimilate the big helpless fleshy thingies first. It's what they usually do when attacking a planet: target the civilians to build up numbers, than the military.
