I find it funny that APM is something people "try and improve" (by randomly selecting their workers 100 times etc).

Just work on your fundamentals, and your APM should improve with it. If you're managing everything you should, this will require a high APM. Focus on doing what you should be doing, not a bunch of meaningless clicks.

In my opinion I always thought a lower APM was better. In the sense of less random meaningless clicks and more effective clicking. That would bring your APM down but each click would be really useful and actually do something. Wasted clicks that do nothing in my opinion just waste time you could have done other more effective things.

Sure more effective clicking is always good. But more pointless clicking is not. So it'd be a balance. Less APM from less pointless clocks. ANd a higher APM from more effective clicks.

Yeah I never really understood the point of grouping your workers over and over at the start of the game... sure it raises you're ATM but it's not really benefically to you winning the game. Personally I think a high ATM isn't really needed at the beginning of the game because there's not much to do anyway

One of the reasons players spam their workers at the beginning is just practice with mouse control and keyboard button pushing.

I agree though that trying to up your APM is a mistake that can be easy to fall into. Working on the basics, and practicing slowly will help you gain the muscle memory needed to raise your APM naturally and accurately. If you're just clicking all over and pushing random buttons, that doesn't help you play or improve really at all.
