They compared it to a cross between galactic civ total annihalation ad Homeworld

I hope the HW part is true at lease where the ability to box select guard and attack commands ad the queueing system. THe queueing system in HW2 was top notch and being able to tell a single unit to gouard a GROUP was the best.

    Anywho good RTS:
Universe at War. the armies are varied wideley and it is fast paced. top notch game
World in Conflic is also good if you like RTTs

You also might want to try Halo Wars when in comes out, if you have a 360 and are into console RTS's. But I'm not so I'm just going to try the demo and see how it is. Your call.

Out of all the RTS's I've played (StarCraft1 included), I gotta say that Dawn of War (especially with the Dark Crusade expansion) is the most strategic. Gasmaskguy is right in saying that it is different to other RTS's, in that instead of building individual units you build squads, and instead of actually mining gold or minerals you gain resources over time depending on how many designated strategic points on the map you've captured.
Gameplay-wise it really does require quite a fair bit of strategy. All units can counter other types of units and can be countered by other types of units. Once when I was playing the original campaign I tried to just use a brute force approach in one of the final missions, and I failed completely. I hardly took out anything and all my squads broke and consequently died. Then I tried using specific weapon types against specific enemy squads and I absolutely ripped through them. After my second attack was so successful, I couldn't believe how quickly my first, brute force attack failed.
I'm hoping (and by the looks of it so far, it is...) that StarCraft2 will be similar. They've already shown us that certain units have specific counters, etc, but it'll be hard for Blizzard to be able to get it to Dawn of War's level of strategy.
