Mothership should be renamed "Star Temple" It's all about temples with the Protoss. This one just moves among the stars.
Viking I kind of like, it's a callback to the old Valkyrie. If you want a similar name, you could go with Hersir or Fenrir, although in my opinion, Fenrir would be better for the Cobra. Thor is an excellent name for such a powerful unit. If you really thing it's cliche, you might be better off with any of the following: "Moljnir, Sleipnir, Nidhogg, Aesir" or, moving away from Norse mythos, we could go for egyptian with "Setna, Osiris, Anubis" or even greek "Myrmidon, Hephaestus, Olympus" Really any powerful name would be good, but I got the feeling from Starcraft, and these new names, that Blizzard has a thing for Norse mythology (i.e.; Yggdrasil, all the Zerg Broods except Leviathan).

As to the Stasis Pod, that's just plain foul. Call it something like the Distortion Module or something like that.

The banshee needs a rename too, maybe the Morrigan (switch it to another celtic legend). Morrigan would actually be a pretty good name for any stealth aircraft.

My one hope is that there's a Battlecruiser or Carrier named after Fenix at some point in the campaign.

they could also go into weapon names....as in Halberd (a type of axe), hatchet, scythe (for the shurikens but maybe something else now that they've been scrapped), sickle, pilum (pronounced like "pie-lum," a type of javelin) or even some sort of hammer for the bigger units, like a mace, or jackhammer

in addition, you could pull a "firebat" sort of thing and use something like "sky" as a prefix: ie skyhammer, skysickle (ehhh maybe not that one)

yea i totally agree that the names in sc2 are bad, i wrote a comment about this in another thread before, ( ...A Few Suggestions ...) and the response that ppl had was that, since blizzard was marketing abroad & internationally, they wanted to 'dumb down' the names so other ppl understood what they meant. But to me thats really disappointing, if you dont know what a name means or don't know its reference, go and research it, and once you're familiar with the reference, you'll understand the name, and will be able to enjoy its meaning. Blizzard shouldn't simply cater to the lowest common denominator. I'm glad that someone else shares this view.

It was like each time i found out that a new unit was introduced, i rushed to see what it was only to be disappointed by its name. The name really colors your perception of the unit. (the units are great though)

Protoss Mothership? how about: the Protoss Vindicator or the Protoss Sovereign
Viking: Halcyon, or Centurion (centurion seems pretty imposing)
Banshee: Marauder, Mephisto (this unit would look good with a serial number before it like today's fighters [F-16, F/A-22] )
Cobra: The 'Hellhound (i dont really mind Cobra though)

idk just some names, dont care if anyone likes them or not, (lol its really fun trying to think up names)

On the topic of protoss names i made this post in another thread and i still thikn its acurate. (atleast if you want to get inot lore)

Also the way i think of protoss names is they are all whatever the protoss call them transalted into english also since the protoss communicate telepathicly i would think they more comunicate ideas instead of actual written words while fklugf;iuorf;oi may mean carrier in written protoss when a human recieves the idea tlepathicly they think carrier that would also explain why the word adun isnt translated because it is a name not a thing.

As for the terran names like thor and cobra well, in my opininon i like the names in SC1 one because they simple and accurate and ultimately seemed to fit the unit. when poeple start talking about names like Icarus (which admitedly sounds cool) things start to get complicated and feel less aporpriate. (although viking doesnt really fit my opinion of a good name either)

    Names I came up with:

    Banshee - specter, shadow
Reaper - Wasp, Mercenary, Locusts, Rogue, Vagabond
    Cobra - Buzzard, Raptor
Thor - Titan, Paul Bunyan, Dreadnaught, The Hammer
    Viking - Wanderer, Homunculus

that's all I can think of for all. they're not all serious, but let me know what you think

That's a great idea. Centurion would be perfect for the Viking. I think that Cobra is ok. It is a fast unit that strikes effectively against larger units. I didn't like Thor when I first heard it. It sounded a little cheesy, but I am getting more used to it now.

That's how people end up dating fat chicks... hehe... One can get use to everything after a time, although I do like thor even though the robot is missing a hammer.

A Thor Hammer?? That might be fun. You could play it like virtual whack-a-zergling. Just click on where you want him to bash, and BANG!

    uh... that's not very nice.

Anyway, I also think that if it cloaks it shouldn't be called the banshee. Banshee's are supposed to be loud as hell. They scream when you know you are about to die in Irish folklore. If you hear a banshee's wail you are going to die.

If it's cloaked, you should never hear it at all.

well although i do agree that banshee is eh, iffy, its hard to create a direct reference for everything. what would you call the banshee? the invisible airplane? silent but deadly? <-- (ooo, i like that )

but, that thing about "the last thing you hear is the screaming banshee" kinda fits in.
because, the last thing you here is the bombs dropping!

The last thing I'd hear is the voice inside my head saying "Holy shieeeeeeee...."
