i have no idea, but i can list some random thoughts on the go..

maybe capital ships couldn't lower in into planetary atmosphere,
superiority fighters can travel through both layers,
things like banshee wouldn't go orbital.
marine/hydra weapons wouldn't be able to damage orbital. so there would an additional category of weapons - ground, air and orbital. and the marines weapon can only hit ground and air etc

I like your thinking on this and I do beleive it could be feasable.

The argument stated is that protoss would get owned by terran because of a small space, right?

Well if the area is small, there will be less guns that would be in range to kill the protoss anyways proving that melee is superior in close quarters. Thus terran would get pwned underground though... Maybe terran are supperior in making larger underground areas by removing rubble some how quickly... Or are you planning on already made tunnels made just s part of the map? There is much to think about here.

PS: underground is cool, but I think the atmosphere level is an easier/better idea. "in my oppinion"

well i would make it so each race gets there own drill unit. that can make its own tunnels at will. but maybe make some areas undrillable.

i think it makes the game to complicated. starcraft is about armys and bases just fighting each other on a nice simple map with units that can do some nice things to counter other units but for the most part aint to complicated. all this talk of underground tunnels and orbital fighting just isnt what starctafts about. and personally i think it makes it seem almost like an rpg but with alot of little dudes instead of one. you know going down in to the dungeon to kill the alein force. and i want an rts not rpg.

I do think an MMORTS would be cool.  That would be one way that the orbital thing would fit in

I don't see how this makes it sound like an rpg. Plus who said there was never room for anything new lol. And its the same thing. just with underground fighting for ground units and orbital fighting for air units. no one said you "HAD" to use the different areas lol.

Not RPG MMORTS. It is a real time strategy but with a large amount of player in the world at a time each fighting amongst their own planets. Winners take a planet then move to the next.
Going from planet to planet you might have some space battles (think Empire at War) The land on a new planet with abase and any units you took with you. You can take what yo want with you but Evey unit you take means one less unit defending your last conquest

I am not talking about bugs or game fallacies. I am talking about the concept where you have to conquer the planet's orbit before assaulting the ground.

I was thinking there would be an ongoing battle between the 3 races with each player picking a race to play as then there will be up to 8v8 with a 4v4 ground battle and a simultaneous 4v4 space battle where the space battle is there to stop the ground players from receiving reinforcements and have the ability to bombay the planet so the ground and spae players would need to coordinate to stop the enemy from parking something over friendlies and the ground players will get GTO cannons that can take out the spacecraft.

If a player sees his team losing when he logs onto Bnet he can attempt a drop onto the planet but would have to run the gauntlet of enemies trusting his allies in space to cover his landing. Also the space players can mover their fleet in and out of orbit to move it to the planet that need the support the most.

How intense would that be? The battle would be continuous with players coming and going in the world When logged out the players units would auto pilot back to a space station owned by that play or clan then when he comes back he flies to a planet and jumps right into the action.

A planet is said to be owned by a team when all opposing teams have been removed from the planet but a new player can always drop onto the planet thus beginning a new match

You know, I have often thought about how cool it would be for that sort of a thing to happen, but there are some things you'd have to deside.

    1) Is it fair that you are being Killed off while you are logged out?
    2) How would you determin the ground battles? Would the winning team from the last battle on that planet still have their base or did it move to another world? How many battlefields are there on 1 planet?
    3) If your team is in trouble at a planet in orbit, why would you try to land on the planet that can't defend itself in orbit...? (How would the loosing side cover your entry to the planet if they can't defend themselves which is why you came)

Just some thoughts for you to think about...

maybe on the ground u could build special turrets that could shoot at ships in space. and or even maybe sent fighters up from the ground to the air. and maybe make certain land units that are only buildable in space and maybe certain air units only buildable on the ground lol.

that would be so cool! and it would be fair because you can just take back planets that were stolen from you and if there is no one there to protect them. free planets!!!;D

So, you are saying it would be great when a clan starts picking on you and they monitor when you are on. Then they slam you when you aren't there to defend yourself. That's what my bro's clan does in a different game I sometimes play.

The idea was that when you are logged off your units can't be attacked. I was thinking that the way to prevent that was that we rely on the fact that space is so mind boggling big that you station would be off the normal travel lines between planets so the only way to find it is to know where it is.

I was also thinking that when you are logged on you can visit your station for faster repairs and to swap out ships so you don't have your entire fleet out at the same time. You can give the coordinate of your station to friends so they can use it for repairs but if ever you piss them off they can attack your station but the auto defenses will make that prospect suicide anyway and attacking a clan base would be exceedingly stupid. If you are not on the AI would defend your base for you. Basically though the only way to lose your ships is to tell the wrong people about your base.

I was thinking there could either be a random map generator that made maps based on the landing location on the planet so if you land near a coast the map will feature a large body of watter at one size. Planet type would also have a factor. A desert planet wouldn't have water while a swamp will have very little actual land and would feature lots of land battles.

There would be some persistence; the winning team will keep their bases but the attacking team can land wherever they want and if they have recon data they probably won't land anywhere near the defender's bases so it won't matter anyway.

The land battles will be a last man standing ordeal. If you manage to defeat all enemy units you win the battle. The enemy can always launch a new force at a different location though starting a new battle.

The ground players would have ground-to-orbit (GTO) weapons and the orbit players will have Orbit-to-ground (OTG) weapons so players can interact with each other. Winning a battle on the ground won't mean everything because if the enemy is winning in space they can always bombard your forces from space; of course you can also just as easily shoot them out of the sky making it easier to win the space around the planet.

I was thinking perhaps for the Terrans the battlecruiser could bombard the planet with its lasers while the ground player can launch a nuke into space. Of course there will be more weapons other than those for terrans and other races. another idea I had was that some units can travel between orbit and ground. For example a space player can send his carriers down to the ground where a player there can take control of them and the ground player can launch his carriers into space for a player up there to use. t the end the builder would get them back if they are still operational unless he decides to make it a permanent gift.

This is true but if you are winning at one planet and another is under attack one of the players can fly to that other planet. Of course it will take some time to get there. Also the team that control the orbit can build a space station there to defend it when the fleet is away.

It wont be clan v. clan the idea is everyone picks a side to play. You make an account then decide if you want to fight for the terrans, Protoss or Zerg (you can have multiple accounts each with a different race). Then you just jump in and call and you can attack an enemy planet in the name of your race and everyone can see who is attacking where and reinforce the players that need it when they log on. You can go anywhere but travel takes time and you base will be near a planet so it will be best to stay in that sector if possible. You can always move your base (for a fee of course). That is good if the front moves up and you get too far behind or get stuck behind enemy lines or if an enemy finds your base.

The only things clans will do is to attack as a group and for stat tracking purposes by saying which group has done the most.

The whole concept is that the battle is ongoing and you can come and go whenever you please. Your units will be hidden when you leave and when you come back you will have a list of planets needing attention as suggestions for attacking.

omg he just desscbribed like 4 different games i have played. But then again there should be maybe 3 sectors, a terran, zerg, and protoss sector. Then all around those would be nuetral sectors with maybe renegade terran colonies or pirates and such. then the deeper u would get to the enemy races territory. the more bonuses the defending force would get so as that 1 side can't just completely own 1 side. and that the game engine balances it based on player levels and number of players on each team so as that not the whole players can all join terran while a few join toss and zerg.

One advantage the defenders would have is that the further you get into their territory the more bases there will be so there will be more/quicker reinforcements.  Only the boldest of players will keep a base on the front for fear of being cut off if the enemy makes a push because if you get trapped in enemy territory you have to travel through hostile spacelanes to get to your allies.

On the player number issue I was thinking it could be like Wow where there are many different realms because you can't fit everyone on one.  How it would work is once you pick a race it will assign you to a server in most need of that race unless you enter a server name yourself.  That way it is autobalance but you can join the same realm as a friend.

Ya know I think this might warrant a new topic. Shall I create one?

heye, sorry trooper, but i wanted to respond to what u guys were talking about earlier, about the planets and orbital batlles and stuff. This is all bassicly from this game i played call Ogame. This is a space planet simulation wehre u build up and empire in space. It is a sort of time based game... if that is what u would call it. Like you build a mine, or something and it takes 2 minutes the first time, then the next time its more like 3 or 4 minutes. Eventually this could take hours. The battleships take days to build, which sort of gives it a actuall time game. Its not that bad so you may want to check it out. Its not RTS though, u just build ships and give the command to attack a planet, u chose by looking at the galaxies. And when you attack a planet it tells you that your fleet has just left your planet, and it gives you the approximit time of arrival to the enemies planet and the time bakc to ur planet. This means that attacking a planet in other galaxies could take several days. But it does not warn the enemy unless their espionage level is really high, which takes lots of time to upgrade. This game goes on for a long time, with upgrades and building times always increasing. So if u want to play join a new server, they come out every 4-5 months or something like that. This game is at ogame.org if u want to check it out.
