CP, the entire game series is not black and white like you expect. It is completely gray. Every character has these transformations so it shouldn't make you weary at all to know that Tychus prolly murdered people for fun prior to resoc.

Q. How does he go to the bathroom?
A. How do astronauts go to the bathroom? The newer suits allow to go into the Shuttle's ejection tube, OR into a creepy little bag thing that gets trashed at the end of the day. Hey you asked...

Q. Blah Blah Blah murder records Blah Blah cigars lah Blah.
A. He's like all other marines, resocialized. I would think that even though they are resocialized they are still pretty much imprisoned. The Novel Queen of Blades explains that resocialized marines still have some freedoms hence the smoking. Or maybe Blizzard thinks it looks cool. (it doesnt.)

I'd say that's a visual hyperbole.
