Cool idea. There was something like that in Warcraft 3, but noone used it due to the footprints dissappearing very quickly.

Re: Footprints in SC2 - tactical uses?

Footprints would look nice - but that's all they should be in my opinion. It would take way too much memory and computer power to have the footprints persist for a significant amount of time. I guess if you happen by some footprints though that would mean that an enemy was just recently in the area. Then I suppose you could follow them to see what/where the enemy is. But overall, I think that a feature like this should be purely for visual pleasure.

It would also, in some cases, tell which units the enemy has. If you see tread tracks; expect Siege Tanks.

ninerman, your opinion sets me thinking, but I think they could solve this by adding a bar in the options menu with footprint quality: good-medium-low. So anyone could see them, just not in the same quality - this way noone would be in disadvantage cause of a worse computer

or they could put a toggle when you create a game "footprints yes/no"

Re: Footprints in SC2 - tactical uses?

Blizzard is not going to put in anything that could affect game strategies and make an on/off button for it. It would be too complicated for multiplayer match-making and harder to define standard conditions.

As far as Hunter's idea for a footprint quality bar - that could possibly work. I'd imagine though it'd be part of the overall graphics options if they did that.

Re: Footprints in SC2 - tactical uses?

While I like the idea of footprints leading back to the enemy base I feel that it would leave players with low end systems at a dissadvantage since the footprints would either be harder to distinguish or cause undue lag.

No visual effects should be mandatory if they don't have too be

Question is if it gets too cluttery if some bastard puts his units on patrol move to fool the other player. :D

I love the footprint idea, my other favorite game, AoE3 had that as well for the snow maps. Made the game more fun and realistic. But I do agree that is could hurt the performance of slower computers, so it should be optional or not included in the game so some gamers aren't alienated.

Re: Footprints in SC2 - tactical uses?

Yes but the majority of players aren't pro. They are not making this game for the pros thy are making it for everyone. That means it has to be acessable to everyone not just pros.

Also winning because you have more disposable income to spend on a computer renders matches obsolete anyway since a simple "I have more money than you" discussion would yield the same result and give the same feeling of discontent to the losing party

There isn't anywayto tell if it is incurrently. No information on this topic has been released to the public. So unless ijffdrie is working for Blizzard (which I highly doubt) he is just assuming it would be in the game, not stating that it is.
