on topic though... could it be that it's a terran only mechanic..? something like warp in... i dunno... just speculating... but err... i think if there were ranks, there would be ways to justify it... like the upgraded marines' wepaons changing into a higher level issue weapon or something...

if the units weapons could just upgrade by killing some units and upping ranks... it might be a bit imba.

yeah, i suppose... hmmm... i really can't think of any other way this "rank system" would fit with proper justification both gameplay and story wise... or maybe it's not a rank system at all... i dunno...

they look like ranks... but I can't see if same units has different ranks, or they can be upgrade level

Well I hope Blizzard won't make "levels" for each unit... That's unnecessary.

It would be great that more a unit kills enemies, more its rank becomes high, and more the damages it gives becomes high.

They would try to keep as far away from Warcraft as possible.

Edit: Hmm, I searched through quite a few screenshots and that one picture, maybe a few more, are the only ones with the chevrons in them. My current theory is team melee maybe? The chevrons showing what your teammate is selecting.

Ok, Edit 2: Erased what I originally wrote since I didn't see that screenshot on the official site. But still, I don't think it has anything to do with ranks, as if it did it would be visible in many more screenshots and wouldn't always be two chevrons.

Check page 3 please. As that may help explain. Most likely the page was ignored because it came from the thread merge. In there I gave my researched and in depth analysis of what the upside down chevrons are. A way to identify a group of units with one casting a spell. It is most likely at this time a trial run of that feature ,which, was most likely used during a previous build of SC2. Please read the entire topic.

I did read it, but I don't really agree. Why would marines need the chevrons if its from a 'caster'? I understand the part 'its because he is in a group with a 'caster', but the idea still doesn't sit well with me.
