I don't think it's ranks.. i am thinking that they are the arrows where to show that they are going to get hurt by the nuke

I came up with a pretty good idea as to what it could be...

They could be a marker for control groups, as in, all the units that are in control group 2 would have 2 downward pointing chevrons above their heads. Or it might just be that once you have a control group, every time you select it, the chevrons will appear so that you can see the units more easily.

I hope that somehow, either above their heads (unlikely) or on the UI where is shows the little unit boxes and their HP that they have something that says "Alpha Squadron" for the Ctrl+1 group, "Beta Squadron" for the Ctrl+2 group, etc., etc.

Two downward-pointing chevrons indicates the rank or corporal in most military ranking systems, so maybe you have a corporal for every control group.

Or it could be that it is a marker for hero units, as I predicted a while ago.

Right now I'm just throwing out ideas in hopes that you guys don't get disappointed that they might use a ranking system like C&C. I myself am not worried because I kinda liked the system in RA2.

Somebody want to explain to me why they think it is a bad idea, other than it being a severe lapse in originality?

naw u see those arrows even without a nuke

I still don't think they are ranks though because first the insgnia is upside down, and second of all, the arrows we see are all double upside down chevron. If they were "ranks" you would prolly see a single, double, and triple (assuming 3 levels) cheverons on units.

EDIT: I agree with nikzad totally that the symbols are for control groups. That seems the most plausible although the screenshots don't seem to correlate too much.

Also if you have a ranking system, it would emphasize a lot more of the micro part of the game which sc isn't really. Upgrades in my opinion are good enough.

This thread is very similar to another thread from two hours before

It was a crap shoot in that they were very close in starting time, but nevertheless there was already a thread about this.

I think 10-Neon just verified that with AoE special attacks (nuke, Psi Storm, etc.) It shows who would be affected by said attack, so that's probably what those mean.

But your screens also supports the verternacy theory, Shdwy. The selected battlecruiser looks as though it's been killing units in the base, like the SCVs, and therefore got ranked. The other battle cruisers are either attacking buildings or arriving. And in the screen below it, look at where the units with the symbols are...that's right, they are guarding the entrance to the base. That means they could easily have been racking up hordes of kills, leading to veterancy. Besides, it looks to close to the symbols of Red Alert 2.

I hope 10-Neon was right though. That would be a neat bit of info to have.

As a follow up post. Two things I've found break my theory.
Unfortunately the biggest breaker is that the appearance of these upside down Chevrons is inconsistent with unit selecting. And at the same time is...
The following links contain pictures with Chevrons.

This next set of pictures contain screenshots of units selected....

There are many more for the Selecting Units , but, you get the point.

The shear amount information on this could mean that its for unit rank or for selecting units groups. So it could go either way. One possible answer is that they represent control groups as Nikzad said ,which, I think makes the most sense from those screenshots. As veterancy is not Starcraft and RA2. Besides the Terran already have Squadrons, Zerg have Swarms, Broods, Ect and Protoss have the Tribes, Fleets, Ect. So I like Nikzad's idea of Command Group besides it makes the most sense. Although, to add onto it the Markers may only appear when you select that group from the Hotkey as you don't see other units marker with upside down chevrons. That being said the unit selecting with its ability could be combined into this if the unit was in an attack group with that caster. So, it will show all units in that control group. My follow up on my research. Enjoy 8)

    **Fixed Links :p

Bonus 200 minerals for taking the effort to research and post these findings and being humble enough to disprove your own theory from before.

say, Indigent, do you like Firebats? something tells me that...

oh and by the way, have anyone seen the singleplayer vid with raynor and all?
I think Tychus sound Exactly as badass as the Firebat with its dark voice, and also, Tychus has a cigarette in his mouth! So, even if the Firebat dos´nt do a comeback, he will be remembered thanx to the badass Tychus!

Actually I will use like 1-2 fire bats when I raid a base rest are medics and marines (When I am using infantry that is). I will use purely firebats and medics to raid bases if with a drop if I make a big enough distraction.

Goliaths chew carriers and battlecrusiers. Nothing as satisfying as persecuting a foe untill he takes shelter on an island, and by the time he comes back with his like 10 carriers they get torn appart by goliaths my partner made.
