The Master of Orion was a masterpiece!
UFO -Enemy Unknown - spent a large part of my life killing aliens
System Shock 2 - i suppose the most exciting game with a thrilling atmosphere. Upgrade system, 1-big-level system, quests - all came from there.

I can't anticipate the appearance of or reference to something I have no knowledge of.

    Over There
    my list

UT2K4 more customizable than any game not by Epic Games, period. also the Invasion coupled with the UT2K4 RPG mod which gives you lvl-up ability, allowing you to get superpowerful artifact weapons, or upgrading your weapon fire speed to the point you fire a flak cannon like a hyper gatling gun on steroids, powerthirst, and unlimited coffee highs. also you get to have awsome skills like ghost were you go ghost and teleport somewhere else, with full health when you die, or ultima that makes you explode as if you said zoogyboogydoo like a nuclear bomb on crazy pills
SC first RTS game i played, i loved it but before i couldn't do melees worth crap.
Rise of Nations It's like any AoE or Empire Earth game, but you literally have unlimited resources.
Dune 2000 like C&C but i also like ordering units and controlling particle tanks (devastator)
C&C 2 Yuri's Revenge and Tiberian Sun I love the fact that buildings appear almost instantly, when deployed. I also like the resources, it gives it a kind of deep down feeling.
Diablo 2 I love any good game with a leveling system (like any ratchet and clank game)
Master of Orion 3 because I like the complex gameplay and interface, makes you more drawn in, warding off enemy spies, ships and making sure you got money left.
Galactic Civilizations 2 Ultimate Edition never played but looks like great fun, and really cool.

these games are my most favourite, UT3 not really, no assault.

you can also separate it out into sub-categories and such.

under FPS, there's the "realistic" or "twitchy" FPS: Modern Warfare 2. or, for ones where people don't usually die in 2 bullets, i vote Team Fortress 2 (with random crits off)

under RPG, there's the american-style RPG, where you pick your own character, responses/personality, and possibly even the story. Fallout 2 is my favourite. then there's the japanese-style RPG, which is more of a "story you can play." i loved FF6 and FF12. of course, there's also MMORPGs, where the point is really to team up with friends and do quests together and stuff. WoW, obviously.

    RTS- starcraft.

driving game- i don't play many of these, but Gran Turismo 4 for realism?

fighting game- i also don't play many of these, either. how's street fighter 4?

shmup: nothing beats the touhou series. i haven't played many of the latest ones, but perfect cherry blossom and imperishable night were great.

I do not consider The Diablo games or the Zelda games, as in I think they are not RPGs in my opinion. More Action/adventure hack'em ups.
ANd my that took a while to think of all those games and categories. But I think they are all legendary games in their categories for their own reasons.

    RPG: Dungeon Siege II.
TBS: Heroes of Might and Magic V.
    FPS: Star Wars Battlefront II
MMORPG: WoW, nothing beats WoW... Except maybe FlyFF sometimes.

Also, I would like to add Spore, but I'm not sure what category is goes in. Maybe, adventure? Lol.

To me it's a sandbox game. As the apace part fo the game never really ends. You just get more planets, befriend or kill more other races, do more missions from the latest expansion pack, then get bored and start all over again. But it never officially ends.

    Have you tried this?
    http://code.google.com/p/opentyrian/

it's the open source port/clone for tyrian (not tyrian 2000 though). And it runs on all major operating systems. I have the OS X version of it from there and it runs just fine. Maybe you should give that a try and see what you think. Cause for the DOS original you need to boot up DOS or emulate DOS for it. And the OpenTyrian vesion bypasses all fo that by running natively in your prefered modern OS.

Hmm, true lol. I got to Space Stage a few days ago, am already 'The Legendary' Rank/Status, and am in the 2mil range occasionally with lots of blue spice. I killed one empire that got on my nerves, and have already contacted the 'Grox'.

I do have a fondness for the 8-bit era, since that's where I started.

Some of the younger people here are perhaps unaware of how computer games culture began. While I didn't witness it directly, my older siblings did, it was in the family, and I was interested in learning about that history. Some of the most legendary were:

-- Manic Miner -- A platform game ahead of it's time written by some genius teenager in assembler (of all languages!). It was difficult, but precise and pixel perfect. If you failed, you only had yourself to blame, because there was no random elements in the game. It was a game about observation and timing... which is easier said than done. It was addictive, and a real talking point. "how did you complete level 8 etc?". It was one of those game you had to play.

-- Attic Attack -- One of the most well made games. The simplicity of an overhead maze of rooms and locked doors, with monsters constantly appearing and trying to sap your life force. The maze was always the same, but expansive enough over 4 floors to make it challenging. Players drew maps, or made mental maps to see how everything connected up. Which locked doors offered the best shortcuts, etc. Besides keys and food, you had to find three special items that allowed you to escape this mad house, but where are they? It was exhilarating.

-- Gauntlet -- Recently ported to XBLA, this was the definitive cooperative game during the 8-bit era. You could play as Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, or Elven Archer. Each of the characters had their own strengths and weaknesses. It hasn't aged particularly well though, imo.

-- Sabre Wulf -- A mind boggling overhead maze set in the jungle. There was a cave. You could see it from the beginning, but how do you get there? Spiders and natives would spring out of the undergrowth and attack you. You fight them off or you run. If you run you get lost. If you get lost you die. Strange plants grew that you could collect, which gave you temporary skills or curses. Occasionally you'd find a new landmark, that would remind you where you are when you come across it again, like a pond, or a hut, or a clearing. In some places, there were stronger creatures, like the hippos, that you couldn't fight off, or the jackal that patrolled a certain area, that would kill you if you didn't time your movements to coincide with it's patrol route. Then there was the forest fire that came if you played too defensively. It was a difficult grind, and map making was almost essential. It really captured the feeling of being lost in the middle of a jungle, and the force of nature closing in around you.

    That's all for now :)

Now try to conquer or befriend the grox. Mwahahaha.
Seriously both of those 2 options are bad but both give you achievments. Befriending them has a bad effect for you once you've befriended them. And conquering every one of their planets even when you work out the secret way. Cause the secret way will remove the grox from some of their planets. But the hard part is you have to do the rest the rest the hard way. And not getting bored. They have hundreds of planets and star systems.
