Mengsk has never demonstrated the ability to defeat the zerg, IMO. I think his anti-zerg efforts were propaganda. Unlike the Confederacy, his troops were actually fighting the zerg and, win or lose, this drew public support.

He just got lucky after the Fall o fTarsonis. The Overmind never had a good reason to attack the terrans once they got Kerrigan. Mengsk sent Duke to Char to "pick a fight" with the zerg.

(Mengsk was pwned by the zerg again in the Brood War, but that's not really fair; the UED had already smacked him down.)

Despite Mengsk's current military strength, the zerg were shown ripping into the Dominion at BlizzCon.

after the fall of tarsonis the Terran Dominion saved a number of worlds from the Swarm according to the official story, and books, and Mengsk knows he can´t directly win against the aliens, he channels his efforts to survive. what the zerg pawned in broodwar wasn´t the real dominion army, it was defeated by the UED, what the zerg defeated where mercenaries and ragtag groups that rallied under Mengsk, not the original and powerful Dominion army. My personnal though is just that Mengsk and the Dominion should take over.

Remember the army the Dominion has now is only the shadows of the old army they had just at the beginning of BW, if given time they will rearm and rebuild steadily

It just seems like SC II is one of those classic alien overwhelming and dominating the human race but is only saved by yet another alien race which is neither friendly to the humans nor the aliens that attacked the humans, but their mission is to slay these "bad" aliens. Sound familiar anyone? It's similar to Alien vs Predator (though Alien vs Predator most likely copied from SC if there was ever any discussions about which inspired which)/

The UED in this case is obviously the humans (or terrans), and as we can see it the terrans are pretty much all under mengsk control at this stage. This means the UED is now probably a thing of the past, and the remaining UEDs are hiding out (sources from the wiki). In my opinion there is a possible chance that Raynor will gain assistance from UEDs, since the UED is now most likely a group labelled as terrorists by Megnsk.

With regards to the UED force being only a small fraction of their total military strength and using Koprulu technology, I think the main reason is the logistics which is reflected in the tactics employed by the UED.

First I'm going to explain my ideas on why the UED expeditionary force had similar technology to the Koprulu terrans. It's not far-fetched to say that most of the weapons of UED may be configured to run on resources available in UED-controlled spaces and maintained by UED native industries. The Koprulu sector resouces may not be able to power UED weapons, the Koprulu industrial infrastructure may be insufficient to repair and maintain UED weaspon systems. These issues would create huge problems if the UED wished to sustain the expeditionary force for a long time in this part of the galaxy as it was impractical to transport fuels from the UED-controlled space or send your equipment back to the UED-controlled space for repair and routine maintanence then send back here. So the UED top brass figured that the best way to sustain their occupation of the Koprulu sector is to fully utilize the Koprulu resources and industry. And how do you achieve that? You use the weapons of the Koprulu sector!

In order to obtain enough Koprulu equipment, the UED military employed a highly trained and mobile expeditionary force, the small size of which enabled them to sneak through enemy detection and attack unsuspecting enemies at vital targets. If you remember, they assulted unsuspecting Dominion forces at Boralis to obtain the vital information about the Dominion military, then based on the information obtained, they used commandos to raid and quickly seize Dylarian shipyard where they were able to obtain a large number of Dominion ships that were instrumental to the UED's future effort in toppling the Dominion.

So this is my take on the UED expeditionary force's size and technology, please feel free to comment.

The stuff about the UED you just posted makes sense, but it was disappointing as well. StarCraft I had a really inflexible unit editor. Compare to Warcraft III, where you could make new races and subraces. (It was complex, but it's not like Blizzard ever let that stop them before.)

I wonder, if the UED remnants show up in StarCraft II, will they mostly use their own units, or K-Sector ones? The former would make more sense due to supply line issues, but you never know...

    Wait no more!

    Gestalt Zero

But wait a week, as Frontline Volume 3 isn't really out yet, so the info is pretty scanty at the moment.

Wait, Just hold on are you telling me that SC2 should have the exact same twist as Stargate and Halo 3? I mean cmon that crap has been used so many times and its just boring now. If anything the Xel naga completely wtf pwnz everyone in the final missions of SC2 and when the expansion comes out. Then we see the UED come in with some pwnage technology, and make the fight an even one. Then after that happens the protoss, hybrids, and the left over terran factions then move to fight against the UED after the xel naga are gone.

Not enough people read the Dark Templar Saga. The xel'naga's unusual life cycle precludes terrans from being them.

I seriously hope that idea never crosses blizzards mind. Its just overdone and makes for a very dull storyline in my opinion.

as sc2 start somes years after BW UED could surely have know that they expedionnairy force have failed and surely got time to make an other fleet.

The Terran Dominion surely got the time to re-arm and group and as well the protoss to get some technologies.

Depending of blizzard, maybe the UED will return.... or maybe not;)

Just an FYI they are supposed to be inspecting EVERY boat that launches for the quagga mussels. They are saying an inspection fee between 10-60 for the inspection.

well I think the UED doesn't exist anymore though to the great defeat at the end of brood war.
and with the rise of the dominion (the "emperor" is picking up the pieces),I don't think any terran force have a chance to come from Earth and fight AGAIN the zerg, protoss and mengsk.
the only possible terran factions in SC2 (for me) is the dominion and raynor with mercs (ex-soldiers) from the sons of korhal,UED and dominon.

The UED is still an immensely strong force. As I and others have stated in the past, the official title of the UED presence in Brood Wars was United Earth Directorate Expeditionary Force. Basically, that huge army with thousands of Marines, capitol ships, mechs, fighters....That was essentially a scouting party. The UED is still an exceptionally large force, and while the loss of DuGalle (I think it was mentioned he was one of their better admirals?) was bad news, they're still a force to be reckoned with, strong enough that the Swarm considered Earth a threat.

That is correct....thats why they captured the battlecruisers from the dylarian shipyards....

they just came here to see whats going on...they weren't expecting to lose everything tho...

p.s i haven't read shadow of the xel'naga yet...but i remember reading somewhere that the xel'naga may have altered terran dna back in the day the played with their protoss-zerg toys

UED fans are too ignorant to realise what is written on the wall.

The UED are an Atheist government who's former leaders organised the genocide of over 400 million people. They destroyed various freedoms of religion and are only interested in upholding their own way of life.

Does Soviet Russia or Communist China ring a bell to any of you?

And you think because they had 50 or so BC's and white armoured Marines saluting the flag that these guys are the hero's?

You people need to wake up and realise that the Terrans are the only real piece of humanity and freedom left. If you like superior firepower and fighting for freedom and other good causes, sorry to tell you but the nations that fought for such things are long gone in StarCraft, don't ever expect to see the UED raise the flag for freedom from terror or peace

The Imperium of Man during the pre-heresy/civil-war period in Warhammer 40,000 was very similar to the UED, but even they tolerated different ideals and beliefs for study at least.

So, you're saying that the UED is a future U.S.A.?

    What gave you that impression?
My two real-world examples were the USSR and China.

The United States of America and nations like America are more likely matched towards the Terran governments and organisations as they fight for more similar causes and concerns.

If you want to start a political debate about America and what it may or may not become, I'm not interested.
