I know I disagree with most people, but I like Red Alert 2 (the only C&C I have played), and
I think it might not be so bad to add ranks to Starcraft. But to be sure of that there´s only one real way: playing it with ranks to see if it gets bad or not.
I just like the idea of having a unit that gets stronger, for me it´s fun even when my enemy has a high rank unit, so that I have to try to kill it quickly before it does too much damage.
there´s one thing surely better on C&C: airplanes didn´t just stand still in the air like a floating ground unit, they had to fly from the airport everytime. I wish my wraiths were like that.

Well, early starcraft flyers (in the beta) used to turn on a side while steering, like real airplanes.

I agree with Joneagle, even though I liked both Red Alert 2 and Warcraft 3. I like them both, but they are NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING in comparison to SC. Because of the mechanics of the game (ie heroes for WC3, one resource for RA2, etc) I don't think you can even compare them. They are totally different styles of RTS, just like SC is totally different from Age of Empires, or Empire Earth, or Rise of Nations

Did you read the part about experience counting for possible elimination of required supplies? I think it's fair and a good way to incorporate ranks if they REALLY want to. Personally I think it's best to leave the game slightly less complicated and lopsided.

Of course it's going to be more likely for a zealot to be promoted than a zergling. It has a larger chance of survival due to the strength of the unit. Therefore unless its easy to promote a zergling....

Seems to complicated to ever be perfectly balanced as Starcraft was and should be.

I just thought I should quote my previous post so that newcomers would see it if they didn't read every post...

    not to sound like a C&C id10t but to solve the problems with zerglings not getting upgraded as compared to a zealot just take a GOOD concept from C&C Generals(yes there was one or maybe 2) in Gen the cheap chinese infantry could get an upgrade at the tech station to be produced with one bar of experience; do the same thing with the spawn pool;

i like the idea of exp, mainly because, as has been said before, reward those who micro their troops as opposed to just sending in the hoard

But dude... it is a pretty insane task to actually micro Zerg... it's more of efficiently letting them be killed. The entire POINT of zerg is to sacrifice one group to have another surround the enemy units.... If you get experience for playing AGAINST the way Zerg is supposed to.... that just won't work.

I think Nikzad's idea that the symbol's for indication of a hero unit makes sense. After all, there was a Seige Tank hero (Edmund Duke), and so far Terrans have the most heroes that we know of. It could have been easy to confuse your hero with the enemy in mirror matches, unless the hero in question was Kerrigan. Although if that was the case, I don't understand why the symbol's so small.

Isn't it possible that the "ranked" unit pictured in the gameplay screenshot was actually a hero?

I mean... Blizzard is known for loving their heroes.

Believe me, as I type it I realize its pretty improbable, but their gameplay COULD have been with heroes....

yeah i said that on page 3 of this thread
I agree with Wick742; it was piss poor to send your heroes into battle, then be unable to find him or her afterwards because they were buried in the middle of 15 other tanks/marines/hydras/lings/etc.

I would be really happy if they made custom models for the heroes, like they do in other RTSs, so there is a way to tell them apart other than having to click them and look for the one with the green box

yea, like make the hero's instead of having the same model of siege tank give it one with a classic look? that would be cool. Also, if it is a hero, who do you think it is? jimmy in a siege tank would be awesome :D.

They'll probably make a unique model for heroes. They did it for WC, no reason not to do it now.

I'm thinking since it's only ever been shown on Terrans hints that it's just a visual confirmation on how many kills your guy has. Prolly an option you can shut off too (it had better be!)
