They use other elements like metal also, minerals is just simplified as all the carbon, ore etc which would be required. But remember not everything is brand new, there will be units that survive the battles.
I'd say a mixture between gritty and shiny. Its been done just check certain Thor pictures.

i cant say that gritty is the word we're looking for here. Sure it may fit battle damaged units and it would be a neat effect , but I'm thinking that maybe the terrans should just use duller metals, or tactical camo along with team colors. It seems to fit any human millitary force just fine.

but the thing is why would the units look like dirt the moment it just came out from the factory or barracks. even tychus in the trailer cinematic has a bright shiny colorful enough color blue plating or armor. =p

I say we compromise and have the buildings constantly on FIRE! That’s what you get for using criminals!

As long as their style won't affect the gameplay, I don't care. But my opinion is that the current style fits this kind of landscape.

an occasional argument between some troops might be funny if you leave them idle for a while, i dont know about bar fights.

Lol that would be win. Marines are idle for like 5 mins while you're blowing up some Protoss with Thors, you check back to your base ans you see a big brawl of Marines with smoke and explicit language flying around.

That would be a total win and then you would see some medic and marine armor laying around near a supply depo ;D lol

edit: this statement is ment to be a joke and not something that I actually thought would be a good game dynamic so dun take seriously

Don, you don't think thats a bit over the top? What's next a landed drop ship thats rocking back and forth with odd sounds coming out of it? I was thinking in terms of like a marine lights a cig and the medic warns him about the dangers of smoking and what not, the driver of a siege tank throws on some tunes for a bit, maybe some go fish and foul language here and there, but certainly no medic/marine orgies. No, there is no Bom chicka wow wow in starcraft.

nah, I've considered alternatives though , like welding/ soddering a guy inside his house. with no chance of exit, and cutting the phone lines, then making his car inoperable.

any way back to the actual topic at hand.
Terran units should not come out freshly gritty, if its fresh it better look fresh , therefore shiny, then degrade to gritty over time. through repair it gets shinier. maybe we'll have something like a car wash , but for terran units.
