The ultra settings in the options menu do say a 1GB gfx card is needed, so that's a minimum requirement for maximum performance. :)

radeon 5850's aren't that expensive and are more than enough. 5670's are much cheaper and should be enough for maximum.

$150 video card and maybe a $150 processor upgrade and i'm good to go.

It's a six year old laptop. So I can't Its the GOFX5600 series which is identical to the 6600 series for desktop. (Performance wise). So I'm hoping I get in eventually as a low spec test subject lol. Probably will get a new comp in the next few months.

GOFX? If you mean GeForce FX then, no, it's not at at all identical to 6600 GT.

It's an oddball graphics card. Most advanced laptop GFX card at the time I purchased it. It runs identically to the 6600, but was not well supported after its release, because so few of them were circulated. Whoa, this comp is actually going on its seventh year. 128mbs on a seven year old laptop? Hell thats damn impressive. This card is in line wit the 6600 card series of the time. Not identical but comparable.

The best way to get recommend settings for high settings of the beta would to take some of the worst computers with betas and see how high they can go and the worst one to get high looknig resonably good, well that's a good bet to what the recommended settings would be.

Mind you I think Blizzard will release these for SC2 when it's retail.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series, so I'm going to need to upgrade it, right?

My gaming PC with XP Home, 4870, 4 GB ram, E7300 dual core @ 2.66 Ghz can play SC2 on all Ultra settings at 20+ fps in all high action scenes, no problem.

My HP laptop, with XP, 2 GB ram, TL-60 dual core 2 Ghz cpu, and Geforce GO! 7200 graphics can squeak out 20 fps on all LOW settings, but in combat scenes with lots of action on the screen it drops as low as 6-10 fps. Fail.

at this point i'm just going to refer most of you to 2 posts i made:
    general system analysis: http://www.starcraft2forum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=13696
    video card upgrades: http://www.starcraft2forum.org/forums/showthread.php?t=16120

raverferret: your specs are fine, it should run Ultra easily. might want to upgrade RAM to 4GB or more for smoother gameplay.
kiksu: no. that's an intel chip, and it sucks balls, like all intel GPUs.
taerocks: gonna need hardware specs. the game is compatible with windows vista, obviously.
    LT: no, the HD4800 series is quite powerful. ATI's naming scheme went from 9000, X000, X1000, then HD2000, HD3000, HD4000, HD5000.

From this thread, he has a Pentium E2200 and Intel GMA 3100 (G31 chipset?). Highly doubt he'll be able to play even low on his PC unless he upgrades the video card.

Funnily enough, my CULV laptop passed YouGamers' SC2 system compatibility test.

    Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz
    Intel GMA X4500MHD
    4GB DDR3

I expected it to fail. Oh well, Intel advertises the G45 as having Shader Model 3 and that might be the only thing the YouGamers site checks for. Performance-wise, the G45 is at best, half as fast as the 780G (HD3200) and probably closer to just 1/3 more often than not.
