    It's not as easy as that. There are countless words with stressed first syllables, and the fact that American English puts the stress in that word on the first syllable doesn't help either ;)

    This is quite a serious problem though. Anyone wanting to learn British English has to elude the American infestation in the world... *sigh*

    i have some strange "reflex": if i hear an accent while speaking the same language as the accenter(except dutch, although i can do that when i try) i start speaking with the same accent

    Although it requires some knowledge, that's not too hard to do. Being able to speak different dialects is where things start getting complicated :)

    'Mate' is Australian. I'd say 'chap' or something is more stereotypically British.

    mate is used for some cities in the uk, such as in london, i think they say 'guv' or something, but in birmingham (in the uk not america) certainly use the word 'mate'

    edit: maybe i should use 'oi' instead of 'good day' because 'good day' sounds more like austrailian

    Yeah, I'm not saying they don't, I'm just saying 'mate' is more stereotypically Australian. Especially with 'good day' (depending on how you say it) seeing as 'g'day mate' is the ultimate Aussie greeting.
