What about a death penalty trial makes it cost so much more?

Why do we care to spend so much money on a method for removing filth from the system?

    Legal fees.

To be sure they're the filth we're trying to remove.

Why are the fees three times that of a normal trial? Do those involved do three times as much work as a non-death-penalty-related trial?

In a capitol punishment case, the defense generally tries to ramp up the legal fees past what the prosecution can handle to keep it a lifer case. Then there's the fact that lawyers specializing in death penalty cases are OBSCENELY expensive. They generally are 250+ and death penalty cases often take hundreds of hours worth of mantime. On the defense side, almost no one has that kind of money. On the prosecution side, even if it's the state, generally there's a cap of ~40,000USD, which puts the lawyer at much lower than his general fee.

Aside from the fact that we're killing people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong, yes.

I thought the point was to remove filth. If I were in charge, there would be a lot more death penalties for lesser crimes.

That is probably over-reacting. Maybe just never ever drive again ever.

Germany has zero tolerance on DUI's. You get one, and your license is gone forever.

Makes sense. They seem to be masters over their relationship with alcohol.

On an unrelated note "We'll see if these guys are such hot stuff in the place where hot stuff used to spew!" passes as a badass one liner in one of the most recomended series in the Star Wars EU. Le sigh.
