Actually I am glad this is 2010 and not sooner. Am I the only one happy by this announcement? Well here is why:

    1. All the World of Warcraft fans. A lot of them like the SC world as well. And as soon as the new expansion gets old and repetitive and monotonous then release SC 2. Something new to do. And it'll sell well with the Warcraft fans. Try to flog it while the expansion is still newish and they will have to choose WoW or SC 2 with their time. Also people will leave WoW when it is boring. So less $ per month there. And to compinsate for that release SC 2. But on the other hand do it early and they might cut themselves short a lot of $ per month from WoW.

    2. What's better? Now and a rush job. (sure 3 years but this game is massive) or later and get it right. It doesn't matter how many patches it will take to get SC 2 perfect. if on day one it does not have the wow factor that SC 1 had. Well then that's a lot of sales and interest in the game gone.

    3. Battle.net 2.0 A lot of people will skip single player initially and hit the online multiplayer. And if that experience is not up to Blizzard standard it might give the game a bad rep.

    4. I think Blizzard know we'd get with the SC 2 idea after a few years as some people are now. So wait a little bit more till they are really bored with it and just forget about it. Then all of a sudden release it. It's be like a fresh SC 2 experience all over again. A second coming maybe. A good way to re-introduce a 3 year old concept.

    5. Make sure all the SC 1 Korean leagues are dead. Then they can push SC 2 there with no fear of any one still attached to the first game over there.

    6. World economic situation. A lot of people out of work.
Sure we all would be saving up for SC 2 over the years. But for a lot of people they will see SC 2 in the stores and go wow I just have to have it. An impulse buy. And well if you have a few money troubles thanks t hard times, well there is less chance of you or many others like you, making such an impulse buy.

And there is probably more reasons I have not thought off. But my point is yes SC 2 in 2010 is sad news. But maybe in the long term it is for the better. The only way it could not be good is if it did a spore. By a spore I mean:

Spore like SC 2 had a longish development period. And the fans were updated during the process. Just like Blizzard is doing with us. But as much as I think spore is great in essence it just did not live up to it's pre-release hype. And turned many many people off the game.

But I think Blizzard are aware of this are making really sure that it blows all expectations out of the water and betters them by a lot.

One problem, starcraft 1 leagues wont die in the next 5 years.

We wouldn't want blizzard to rush the game. Clearly 5 years is much to short of time to release a polished game. Clearly that's the real reason why they are delaying. A rts game takes about 20 years to make.
    Clearly. :)

I'm not surprised at all seeing as how the beta did not start yet after half of 2009 was over. By the time August came, I was already thinking that it would be coming out in 2010. Technically, it hasn't been delayed, Blizzard never did give a specific release date...

Well i'm past caring. I'll just play SC 1 and continously fail online `till SC 2 comes out and then probably be disappointed by it.

The peek-a-boo reaver just cried a little bit....

But seriously, if they need more time to make the Battle.Net 2.0 work perfectly, then I'll wait. It's a service I plan on using a lot.

@Prodigal: Where did they clarify it was being early 2010? The only comments I've seen so far make it pretty clear that it is mid-2010.

    A question.

Why is Activision saying this info? I thought Blizzard ran their games and got to make the press releases too? Or is Activision doing that now? I would have preferred if the info came from the Blizzard site from a Blizzard employee.

Oh My Goodness. I'd like to know if the death animations will be playable just in the solo campaign and not in multiplayer

Blizzard is not same as it was when they made best games. Now they are more corporation like. Their priority is our cash then everything else. Also does anyone know the original team that made Starcraft 1and who is on team for Starcraft 2?

EA is just more experienced since they do that longer but Blizzard is starting to like cash. Just imagine how much WoW is worth and now they have divided Starcraft 2 in three packs.

Indeed, they want to deliver an epic story and new gameplay, that's why they split it. I think its awesome.
