The Beta is for minor balancing, not major. Most of it has already been done behind the scenes. Do you really think they're gonna let a small group of amateurs decide the empirical truth about it? As you said yourself, it's the sequel to the most balanced game of all time. How do you think it gets that balanced? Not by relying only on Beta feedback, that's for sure.

The Beta is a way to detect and handle bugs, glitches, computer stress and similar, and for the audience to give a final verdict before the release, so that Blizzard can adjust their itineraries accordingly. Any balancing is merely data-based, e.g. a minor increase or decrease in attack values or similar.

Balancing is all about understanding the game structure and knowing advanced game design theory (and applying it to a game). They'd never leave the balancing to strangers who don't know jack about it. Instead, they let players critique what they've already done, so that they can do the last minute tweaks and changes to make it fit the contemporary audience even more.

Open Beta is an important part of gamemaking, and Blizzard is wise to allow it. But it's by no means the only part, nor the biggest. It's just "the little extra" that good games should have.

Agreed. But I think there will be some error finding too. Maybe cause Blizzard is a closed group some things might slip like a balance issue or a broken sprite or something. And sure as sure the players in open beta will notice it and blog about it till the cows come home. It's a cheap way for Blizz to do some some QA testing for the game. As they don't have to pay specalist beta testers. They can use the guinea pigs (or open beta testers) for free.

If Blizzard needs a beta tester with a very good computer (win 7 64 bits, very good processorS, very good graphic card, 8 GO RAM) they can give me the chance to test the game.

Hope SC2 will use the maximum of effects from a 64 bits OS (maximum RAM) and this will allow us to activate-deactivate graphic options like a normal game.

Dustin Browder has stated several times that they fully expect to see all kinds of balance issues come to light during the beta. The way staff play is not going to be the way the average player plays, and not the way the strongest players will play. Some things will be too "hard" and some units will be exploitable. They can catch a good chunk of that stuff with internal testing, but in the end, they need to expose the game to the "real thing" in order to identify all of the problems.

These kinds of optimizations only happens towards the end of development so this is a sign that beta is close. Not that we didn't know this already and not that this means it's in the next month or so :D

Maybe because the SP people are needed for handling the feedback from the beta testers.

Yes, and it will all be minor. Not minor in terms of amount, but in terms of severity.

as long as battle.net 2.0 is not over the beta will not come. and as A LOT OF WOW ACCOUNTS ARE PIRATED Blizzard will not launch the new battle.net before they don't find solutions to those hacks and piracy.
