In fact, I like the X form.. And the whole design of the tank.
But I would like your designs in the game too.
As I see your units are coloured more metallic, so if blizzard wants to change, they must change all unit and building couours to make it the same with yours.

nice job archlimit, the height of tanks feels quite low, can you a marine next to it to give us a sense of scale?

Archlimit: the SC2 community is really lucky to have individuals like you push themselves, as a voice for the community, to do things that the average poster cannot do. These models show the potential "redesigns" that help further the debate.

    ----

On topic, the siege mode X factor i originally thought was becuase the old Siege tank from SC would always pivot at a given angel (due to sprites) before transforming. An X form would kind of eliminate that.
The SC2 Siege tank is noticeablly larger than the bunker (something i disapprove of)..and the main weakness of the design was the "lippish" design of the turret. It's interesting that you've opted for the tri-barrel design for siege mode. I've kind of that it would be awesome if the siege-mode would have a special 1-barrel, leaving the dual barrels for regular tank mode.
I'm a fan of the SC design, but the turret always looked like it had the colour (your alliegence) bar that runs across the turret. I suppose it's because the tank fires plasma instead of shells, but those are small details.

The transformation looks complex, but it's becuase you hid the Siege-mode turret in the front base of the siege tank (which again leaves an empty gap during siege mode). I really like how the bracing-legs come out of the sides of the tank.

The rear of the tank looks very acceptable and tasteful, it's just that front of the tank looks too large for my tastes.
Just for a rant, the turrets in tank mode seem too "slim" to fire futuristic tank shells. Im' thinking at least as fat as thor's turrets.

-- I'd think that siege mode would raise the overall height of the vehicle, as you'd want as much line-of-sight as possible, and for range issues. A thing i liked about SC2 siege mode is that the tanks feel to have raised a bit (or at least hasn't sunk down)

The tank is elongated (like SC) but for the design of the Siege tank it might as well be as square as possible (just beacuse it's meant to sit there and fire at anything that comes close).

instead of totally redesigning the tank, why dont you slightly modify the blizzard redesign siege so that it doesnt go x mode

    It's a 170mm gun... just like this one http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/dprk/m-1978-170.htm
It's not on a ship, it's a self propelled artillery vehicle. And look, no feet.

Siege tanks don't fire their siege cannon while moving and don't fire their main cannon while moving. Self propelled artillery of today does not fire while moving and yet it also does not have feet.

This makes no sense in physics.

Oh? And where did you find this out?

Just because I'm not kissing his *** in my post does not mean I do not like the model. I think it's a great model that happens to have flaws which, by the way, ArchLimit said were actual flaws in his response. Most people have no idea how to do 3D **** so they think it's so cool when someone makes something. I know how it's done so that "magic" is completely lost on me.

So, stop "standing up for" people who don't need standing up for.

Yay! I really like the way the turret attaches to the main cannon within the bulkhead. That was cool. But In SC1 didn't it have 3 leg thingies? like a tripod type arrangement? There was one in the back as well as the ones on the side, I think your design with a tripod arrangement of support legs would be all killah, nothin iller
