I have an ATI Radeon graphics card but there isn't any number after HD, just ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series.. How good is that graphics card? Will it be able to run SC2 on high settings?

Is it possible to use an external graphics card on a laptop or install one and have it use that instead of the chipset?

I know you can use external hard drives to store and retrieve information rather than the internal one, and wondering if the same thing would work for graphics.

The Integrated vid card makes me wonder, I think it's a 512 though.

    Innit?

the radeon xpress 200 is in integrated chipset... consider it in the generation of the X000's. so, pretty low end... it's like an X200. you'll be needing a new video card. =P

same with the 4200... it's another integrated card, and won't be powerful enough. you'd want a dedicated card, something that ends in -600 at least (like the 4650, 4670, 5670, etc.)

and to LT: yes, the 4800 lineup should definitely be powerful enough for SC2. not too sure if it's the 4830, 4850, 4870, or 4890, but all of them should be able to handle ultra at 1680x1050. the 4870 and 4890 can probably do it at 1920x1200.

i guess i wasn't too clear on the description on the first post, by HD2/3/4/5 series i meant HD 2xxx, 3xxx, etc.

So does this mean i wont be able to play the game? or will i but at very low settings?

At any rate i was thinking of buying this card soon. Maybe in my next 2 paychecks or so.

Hopefully that will be more than enough.

    Thank you for the reply.

i wouldn't consider it at all. it might be able to start up the game with everything on low... but even then it would be kinda choppy. and you'd have to avoid 3v3 and 4v4 games like the plague.

the 5770 is a great card for the price, and it should be able to run the game on Ultra, no problem.

dire you might want to get a newer computer if possible... The processor can probably handle it but it will load really slow, and with that RAM I dont know.... The graphics card might be able to handle it on low...

I'm planning on sticking to the campaign for a while anyways.

A demo will probably be available for the game as well, I could probably check what settings I could handle there.

My screen resolution is 1280x1024 and with 4GB of RAM I will be able to play the game on ultra, right?

    Computer Help

Hey guys, I am planning to buy a new computer and by following the guidelines in the opening post, I am planning to buy the following computer for $2600:

    Alienware Aurora from Dell

    Processor: Intel® Core™ i7 920 (2.66GHz, 8MB Cache)

Operating System: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

Monitor: 21.5" Dell ST2210 Full HD Monitor with VGA cable

    Memory: 6GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - (3x 2048MB)

    Hard Drive:
    500GB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 16MB Cache HDD

    Graphics Card: Single 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon™ HD 5870

Sound Card Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

Cooling Option: Alienware® High-Performance Liquid Cooling

Based on the guidelines, I believe this computer should run SC2 well, and hopefully be useful in the next 4-5 years or so. But I am just looking for any advice/your ideas about that configuration and if its good/worth the money.

    Also a few questions:

To future proof this computer, is it best to do any of:

    1) For an extra $100, upgrade Processor to a
    Intel® Core™ i7 930 Quad Core Processor (2.8GHz, 8MB Cache)

    2) For an extra $150, upgrade Memory to a 9GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz - (3x 1024MB + 3x 2048MB)

I really don't want to spend anymore since it's already at $2600, but what do you think?

If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it. Thanks

Its me again, how about this computer for $2300:

    Dell Studio XPS 9000

    Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-920 processor(8MB L3 Cache, 2.66GHz)

Operating System: Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English

Monitor: 21.5" Dell ST2210 Full HD Monitor with VGA cable

    Memory: 9GB Tri-Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz - 6 DIMMs

    Hard Drive:
1TB 7200 RPM SATA Hard Drive

Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5

Sound Card Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio

It's pretty much the same specs except for the 9GB RAM and 1TB of memory (however I am wondering why it's so much cheaper with better RAM/HD space? Maybe I am being mislead here),

The downside is that there is no Liquid Cooling and doesn't look as cool as the alienware.

Which would you rather buy? (I prefer to spend less)

Thanks again for any help :)

I would recommend a power supply of 900+ watts these days. Many of the newer video cards coming out these days are requiring 800 watts.

Also, if you want to create your own custom computer and have it put together for you then I recommend http://www.cyberpowerpc.com Their prices are really good and they get good reviews from customers.

That's one hell of a video card right there. At 153.6 GB/s that's the best ATI card available, nothing can touch it except for maybe the GeForce GTX 480.

    @arneezy
Stick to 6GB of memory (preferably 3x2GB DDR3 1333 or 1600). The Alienware is overpriced but you do pay a premium for the Alienware name and customer service. Frankly, I prefer to build my own. You can build something similar for a bit less than the XPS 9000 but the advantage is you have full control over the build and quality. Also, price difference of the i7-920 and i7-930 is $10. It's not worth paying extra $100 for a 133MHz increase.

Case: $200 (a pretty nice one)
PSU: $200 (if you go into overkill KiloWatt range, otherwise ~$100-150 for a good quality 700W)
MB: X58, $300 (fairly high end, you can already get decent triple-SLI Gigabyte and ASUS boards for $200)
    CPU: i7-930, $300
    GPU: HD 5870 1GB, $400
    RAM: 3x2GB DDR3 1600, $200
    HDD: 1TB 7200RPM, $80
    ODD: DVD-RW, $20
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium x64 OEM, $100

If you don't want to build it yourself, I second Kruelgor's suggestion (CyberPowerPC).

    I have a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GTS
    My display is 1440x900.
I'm having issues where it lags in extreme late game with 4v4's. I'm worried my computer will get choppy in the campaign and the massive custom games. Is the video card causing this?

    Operating system is Windows 7 64 bit and my proccessor is Athlon x 4 620 processor (4 CPU's), 2.6ghz

I have NVIDIA GeForce GT 220.

approx. total memory is 3802 mb

    current display mode is 1680 x 1050

I was just wondering if my computer could handle something like this game?

I am pretty sure everything is fine, except i am alittle worried about my video card. I played Grand Theft Auto 4 on it, but it was a little choppy and slow driving full speed and things like that.

if anyone can help that would be greatly appreacited!
