I think the Protoss just frantically rub their mouthless patch up against anything edible and just sort of absorbs it frantically, ultimately rendering them malnourished.

Facts to support this claim:

1) They look like they're suffering from anorexia.
2) It's probably the reason they don't laugh. I don't laugh when I'm hungry.
