I don't think the Brood Lord is shopped. It does have a vaguely drone-ish shape, but not enough to make me believe it's just a highly-altered drone. It could easily be attributed to it being a unit from the same race, made by the same art team. There's even the possibility that it is based off the drone model, tossed together for testing.

I'm with Neon on the Brood Lord. The center may look a lot like the Drone's carapace, but one thing I've been noticing with all the Zerg model updates is that the units are getting much more solid and streamlined. Take the Overlord for example: The development model has that carapace running down the center of the back, followed by what looks like an under-carapace on the sides, then the air sacs just bulging out of nowhere. The most recent update has made the air sacs blend in with the rest of the Overlord's body. I can see the same thing happening with the Swarm Guardian/Brood Lord. The old model was a bunch of brown spikes and carapace with little purple bubbles growing from seemingly nowhere. The model in question has much more flesh and blood on it, and is very reminiscent of the original Guardian.

I do hope they add a tail onto the Brood Lord though. I was very fond of that swimming motion that the very very First Swarm Guardian had. :D
