It's also annoying when you hate the character you're playing as.

@Vampire - I think it makes a difference what/who your character is. It changes the storytelling vibe of the game. The original SC was kind of like taking part in an epic movie, with you controlling all of the battle sequences while the computer handles most of the plot development. By making you the actual characters of the world, SC2 is trying to draw you in a bit more, I guess.

But I see how Raynor just flitting around space taking jobs that may or may not impact the plot is a different kind of storytelling altogether.

I agree with Vampire. I really don't care who I am in the game. As long as they include the player some how I am happy.

I mainly agree with Vampire, though I would prefer to have a leading unit, like Jim Raynor with tonns of health unlike other units, attacking the enemy. That would kind of be more fun.

Personally I like the namelessness of SC like you were the guy at the board meeting who just sat there nodding his head but really was the guy that made thing happen. Never spoke out, just did the job. I always liked that kind of character.

Too much love for thy self my friend is called Narcissism and that often leads to psycho disorders... cool.

    - i dont care who will be the main character, as long as I can get a hand on that game this year, story specifications such as the person commanding the war doesnt concern my interest... im more looking into "whos the new kid in town" type... im looking forward to Nova being kerrigans legitimate successor..

I selected other, because I'd prefer to have a choice of various characters.

I'd rather my game characters were female. So perhaps instead of a lone hero, the story follows team of heroes, and through the campaigns you can elect any one of them to be your avatar and protagonist. :)

I wasn't thinking of a team from an MMO perspective, just a crew of maybe 6 pre defined heros, and you get to choose one of them to be your avatar in each mission.

I'm not sure how an MMO could work for starcraft. The unit types are too varied I think, because unlike warcraft, there aren't any standard classes, like warrior or rogue.

So how would you play as a zergling? And how would that be balanced playing vs a zealot or an archon. It's unrealisitic I think.

A starcraft MMO would have to take a different angle. More like an MMORTS, where instead one unit, you control various units that add up to so many food.

The individual characters/units don't have experience levels, but the player (group) would have a combined experience level.

So like if you were a level X player, you could control X supply. So if you're a level 40 player, then your group could be 80 zerglings, or 40 zealots, or 5 battlecruisers, or some other mixture.

If your units die, you'd have to scroll the map and click on the nearest allied barracks/hive/gateway/starport/or whatever to enqueue your new units. Depending on other players present doing the same thing, it might take some time before your units come out of the barracks.

And no, players wouldn't control buildings, but they would use them to build units, and to research upgrades for their own units. These of course would be expensive and the tech tree would have to be "some research done permits other research possible" , or "player level permits some research possible".

I think that could work then, but that's just my opinion. :)

I think an MMO for Starcraft would be simply Starcraft: Ghost multiplayer times a hundredfold.

So more of an mmo shooter than an mmo rpg? Would that also mean few character classes to choose from? Like terran ghost, or... another terran ghost...

I'd hope for customizable characters to a point, but to avoid being Marine #2142453562 all the time, have just like... lounge areas, where you can just hang around in street clothes.

I would kill for a SC MMO, they could do customization just fine and you could choose from so many different things. Not sure who I would be in the MMO Zealot, Hydralisk, Marine... or Dark Templar, Queen (new one), Ghost... the possibilities are endless!

Another problem with a starcraft mmo, is that it it isn't classical combat, and especially for terrans, it's all derived from their guns -- Marines pull triggers, and it's hard for me to imagine how much skill they could develop to do additional abilities. ok, better guns. better armor. That's easy. But abilities? But in the story these people are just trained psychos... and skillfully honed abilities just doesn't gel with that image.

So, maybe gearing up to an mmo... we'll see in the SC2 campaigns, that they're not really psychopaths, it's just been some magic spell from the burning le.. I mean, a curable sickness that's all down to too much vespene fumes... (yeah that will work  :D)

Zealots might be easier to find abilities for because (they've become ninjas now) their combat style can develop special moves, like rogues. :)

Zerg... evolution... so you could imagine playing a generic breed with non specific abilities and slowly evolve things like acid projectile and wings. ;)

But there just doesn't seem to be enough substance to build an rpg from.

Give me a few examples of lower level marine abilities, and I'll think the idea of an mmorpg has more credibility. (out of smilies error)

I'd be 100% against an MMORPG, I'm thinking more MMOFPS.

Different ammunition types, different weapon types, different armor types, and maybe even stims with different effects, but still with the health cost.

How about different shots? Like an archer develops different skills like multi shot, perhaps the ability to make your own amunition in which case mixing different things could give you different effects like bullets that become shrapnel and thus cause bleeding effects, or explosive shells, or shells that have special effects like the lock down ability, it could paralyze someone for a set amount of time, you could become more or less an engineer in which you make upgrades for your weapons like scopes and stocks. In any case it should be more technilogically based and less skill based, that's just who the Terran are.
