Pearce Says Fourth Race Possible in Expansion

I don't really like the idea of a fourth race being added. Right now, the three races all have a specific feel and are all pretty diverse. I'm afraid that if a fourth race was added, a lot of that diversity would be lost and you would end up getting units from different factions that were close to each other.

On the other hand, if any company can pull it off, its Blizzard.

 

Maybe the Xel'Naga will use, parallely to the gas and minerals, the ruins of destroyed mechanic units and structures. That's a new gameplay for Starcraft, but not for some other RTS, which came just after the big rival of Starcraft, Total Annihilation

And for the organic units and structures (zerg), maybe the Xel'Naga will use a special .... ability to recolt mineral and gas from corpses.

The Xel'naga are a mixity of Zerg and Protoss thus their way to exist must be equal to those both races.

 

Well the hybrid race that Duran seeded across several worlds is out there so that should be cropping up at some point. Likely they'll "make an appearance" but not be a full playable race. Much like the scourge in WC3.

I think they'll wait for the expansion to roll out the new race. According to the lore the Xel'Naga were wiped out by the Zerg but I wouldn't be too surprised to see something still crop up concerning them too. The protoss and the zerg are their children after all.

 

Whatever blizzard choose to do in the expansion, some of these ideas for races sound awesome to me!

Blizzard said in a Q & A that actual game mods including custom races will be possible, so I'm hoping someone makes a total conversion mod that makes
terran -> UED,
zerg -> hybrid,
protoss -> Xel'naga,

... or maybe makes those three new alongside the regular races. Why stop at a fourth race when you could have 6!

(Of course it would never be perfect balance for e-sport etc, but it would be fun!)

or zerg protoss, and the kerrigans

Nyet. According to the manual, the greater whole of the xel'naga were wiped out. It's amazing after more than ten years what happens to memories.

 

To add to this, one of the videos blizzard has shown has confirmed the Xel'Naga are still around (and will almost certainly make an appearance in SC2).

 

That would be the terran campaign video, where Zeraztul says "the xel'naga return".

 

It might be a bit redundant having the xel'naga, the protoss is the advance race in this game, to have an even more advance race would seem well...makes you kind of question "so what's the point of the protoss? there is another advance race" or it could be the other way around

 

Good point but if they throw in the Samoengy as well, then We could have two advanced races to balance out the other super advanced race which are the Xels.

 

As anyone played Conquest: Frontier Wars? It's like starcraft, but all in space. The 4th race in it was a reptile race. I predicting that it would be the same in starcraft.

 

And this reptile race will be the Samoengy? Right? RIGHT!!??

The lack of arms (and thus the hard time they would have to evolve into such a technological species) makes me wonder if they didn't get a push in the right direction from the Xel'naga. They have done it before.

 

Your probably right about that. Xel'naga could have helped them out. I mean they did create the zerg, and protoss. Then had the crap beat out of them. If there is any Xel'naga left, they are probably in some other galaxy.

 

Unless done perfectly, a fourth race would be extremely hard to add in and balance... I'de rather see just more new mechanics, units, units being rehashed, etc. when it comes to an expansion. Broodwar really didn't add that much in bulk, but what those few additions made to gameplay was massive.
