"All jedi are not good" literally means every single jedi is not good. It is almost impossible to phrase all and jedi and say that they are not good without this phrase. Since this phrase is basically exclusive to saying 'all != good,' it follows that this phrase only means all jedi are not good and that any other interpretation is incorrect.

The problem is is that you're viewing the 'not good' as a complete clause, when, in fact, the 'not' belongs to 'all Jedi'

'Good' is a completely separate entity.

If you switch it around, Good are not all Jedi.

It means that primarily only in today's English.

You wouldn't say that the "all is not as it seems" phrase means nothing is what it seems, would you? Or 'all that glitters is not gold'?

I would say that's what those mean, and I would say the phrases are poor english. If the not belonged to 'all jedi' it would be with the all jedi, before the verb 'are.'

Can we get back to fictional philosophies instead of discussing grammar?

That's... odd, coming from a native speaker, since "all that glitters is not gold" is quite a popular saying for "not everything is what it seems". I mean I've even heard it in speech.

@Jiffy: Mods are discussing something. Do you think saying something like that is a smart move?

I understand what the phrase is supposed to mean. "It ain't over 'till the fat lady sings" is also bad grammar. I'm a very literal person when it comes to language. Math and programming makes more sense to me than languages.

    That.... Is an epic idea.

We make a thread, sign up for who wants to participate, then a few days later we start 'voting'.

There is the problem we can't both add and remove rep on the same day.

And if any of the staff asks, it was your idea. In fact I might just delete and edit some posts.
