I think so. Although in profiles the username is bigger, in posts anything more than the 16x16 would look out of place. But even if they could be slightly bigger unit portraits would still not be possible.

I kind of like the second set of awards but they don't seem too popular so maybe the first set would do fine with tweaks, but I'm not sure what kind. Creases in the upper part seem plausible, but only vertical lines, which would make them boring/too similar once applied to several. Some could also have a slightly more orangey tint for the metal part and... that's about it off the top of my head.
I don't want to make them differ in size/proportions, or colours too much (where there'd be gold, silver, and bronze variants) to make them more equal.

Here are some changes that could be applied independently from each other to similar colours to make them more distinct:

Not the unit portraits, just the icons. The build icons for the units and the abilty icons, are much less ccomplicated

They are, but they still get reduced to nonsense at such size. Also this is an SC2 forum, not an SC1 one, so that's a second meh for using in-game icons.

Well since we don't have SC2 icons what else can we dop but use SC1?
It's still better than ordinary ribbons and medals

You think you could elaborate on that? :p

Anyway, I do think that while they have to have some detail to them to make them interesting, keeping them fairly simple gets the point across more easily. Take the sticky, tag, and attachment icons: they're very simple yet distinctive and straightforward.

Messed around with some basic things:
