ahh for those of us who are just starting in MTG, the best way to play against other noob players is to remind yourself that you simply win if you are more efficient. They all start with 20 life... and it's in your best interest to take them to 0 (ie deal 20ish damage) before they kill you.

This is why playing an aggro style deck ..generally green and/or red that is centered more to take the opponant down to 0 in a reasonable 5-7 turns. Building decks that center around life gain or pumping your creatures to ridiculous power/toughness is just going to slow you down. Even white can play white weenie (popular as ever now).

Well thats my advice if u want to win against your friends (who i assume will be new too). Dabble in control-style decks once you feel more comfortable (control requires a bit more decision making) and then finally have a try @ combo style decks (which more or else has to be played very tightly)

My specialty is slivers. Slivers work very well for both beginners and experts. But if you use them, beware of red and black decks that use only life damage and sacrificing abilities. Slivers won't stop these. Also beware of other sliver decks unless you have time to play stalemate games that last over an hour. Also look out for the Sliver Overlord which has the ability to control your slivers.

If you find yourself fighting a sliver deck, use decks that target creature cards and ones that do direct damage to life points. Most sliver decks are almost all creatures, so don't think too much about what spells they could cast against your creatures. But do watch out for whatever sliver abilities are in play, so try to read whatever sliver cards are in play, since all sliver effects are in play at all times. Attack early before there are too many slivers out, or the player may become almost impossible to play. After 3 to 4 slivers are out, depending on their effects, they will become very difficult to take out.

In the hands of an experienced sliver player, fighting a sliver deck would be like fighting a Korean at SC. Unless you have some experience fighting them, prepare for a grueling battle ahead.

20 life per turn?!?! My slivers at full strength would barely be able to hold that off if lucky. I have been able to beat elfish decks, but none as powerful as you say yours is. I have also been able to deal 28+ damage per turn with only 5 slivers attacking. I rarely attack with everything because I know doing so would leave me open to counter attacks.

example: If I have 8 slivers in play, I will only use 4-6 slivers to attack and leave others to defend if my attack fails to kill the enemy. I also have many artifacts and spells that means that my deck doesn't have the spell deficiency that many other sliver decks do.

ensnaring bridge? Never heard of it.

But red direct damage abilities is one of the sliver's few weaknesses.

Ensnaring Bridges is an artifact card for... 5 I believe, it doesn't let creatures with power greater than the number of cards in your hand attack you.

I would say black or blue would be the best in stopping slivers, with white in a VERY close third. Black has a lot of cards that can get around abilities like the Ward Sliver, like Chainer's Edict, I believe its called. And the new Damnation from black is good, its a black version of whites Wrath of God. Kills all creatures and they can't regenerate. Blue has the ability to stop them from ever coming out with counterspells, and can, for 3 colorless and 2 blue I think, send all creatures back to their owners hand with Upheavel. Playing a blue deck, that shouldn't hurt you too badly as blue USUALLY depends more on control in means other than creatures.

And you say burn decks stop slivers? I say ward sliver for red. Now you lose. And gaining 20 life a turn isn't that much really. If you have two essence slivers and a few muscle slivers, you can easily gain double that.

Don't splash black for anti-artifact. Black doesn't have much skill in stopping those. Add some boomerangs if you can find them, and make sure to have a good amount of counter spell like abilities. If you WANT to go dual-color to deal with artifacts go white for Disenchant, or green for Naturalize.

ohhh, black and blue work very well together. Its been a while since I played last but I still know the destructive power of a blue/black and red/black decks. They work wonders together. But I still prefer slivers. The current deck I use is a red/green/white sliver deck. It used to be all five colors ( a.k.a. rainbow deck) but, was just too hard to play and too big (80 cards, lol).

Try to keep your deck at aroung 40-60 cards for maximum effect by having variety and decent chances to draw the card needed at any point in battles. Works well for me at about 55-60 cards for three colored decks and 45-50 for two colored decks.
Ward sliver, got one of those, makes people with single colored deck hate me. :( Can't figure out why, I like it. ;) But the ward sliver doesn't protect against direct damage, only damage done to allied slivers.

Oh I know the power of Black/Blue. My favorite deck is black/blue. But in dealing with artifacts, the black doesn't help much. Can't use it in my local tournies anyway, the format is 1.5 and I run a time walk and ancestral recall in that deck.

Ward sliver protects against burn by forcing the burn deck to only throw spells to your dome, and it doubles as making all your slivers unblockable. If the sliver deck is solid, you WILL out parse the burn deck in damage. I have a somewhat solid sliver deck myself :)

I would say my most solid overall deck that I can use in tournies is my variation on white weenie. Only difference really is that I have crusades, glorious anthems and exalted angels, and that I don't run armageddon. Still works very well in stomping most of the people I play against. Granted, people that have the decks that would absolutely crush it like reanimator decks or other types of decks that can get something very powerful out before 5th turn, but those people don't make it in time for the tourny ;)

Use a few might slivers and BANG! The enemy is gone before you know it. However, my deck has all the new slivers, but none of the older ones except ward sliver because I didn't get into magic until after they stopped producing slivers for those few years. Time Spiral and Planar Chaos slivers are great for strength/toughness and a few have pretty good effects as well like trample, flanking, and regeneration (very fun one indeed :) ).

I only have the Onslaught block and below slivers, with the exception of some virulent slivers I bought a few days back that haven't found their way into my deck yet. I had stopped playing when the Ravnica block came out, 2nd set in I think. My sliver deck, although somewhat solid, is somewhat unwieldy though. It can crap out very easily compared to my goblin, white, or black/blue decks. But even if it only slightly works, its fairly deadly.

I don't have my deck on me, so the mama count may be wrong, but the other info. is correct.

    Might Sliver:
    Green
    3 + 2 forests
    3/3
    All slivers get +2/+2

    Watcher Sliver
    White
    2 + 2 plains
    2/2
    All sliver get +0/+2

    Bonebreaker Sliver
    Red
    2 + 2 mountains
    2/2
    All slivers get +2/+0

Nice powers ups isn't it. If only they cost a little less

You could try. See if it makes oyur deck any better. Its usually wise to have more than one color in your deck.

All those darn immune to color spells. Just like Ward Sliver.

Choose a color. All slivers have immunity to choosen color.

As I said before Black/blue is very powerful combo. Both colors are all about destroying your opponents field and building up your side of the field at the same time. Blue and green is rarer because its not seen as powerful and is harder to use.

A blue/green deck attacks both your opponent while producing powerful creature while also having some life increasing spells.
