Touhou series- this series practically defines the shmup genre. absolutely insane. the best i can do is halfway through easy mode without using any continues... and there are people out there who can get through Lunatic difficulty without losing a single life. an interesting factoid is that the "company" that makes it, Team Shanghai Alice, is actually just one person. he does everything, from artwork, music, coding, etc.

Disgaea series - strategic RPGs. hilarious story, great gameplay. and for the obsessive gamers who like to max things out... you can level up your characters to 9999, items to 100, weapon masteries to 255, skills to 255... and reincarnate and do it all over again...

Odin Sphere - absolutely beautiful. a side-scrolling action RPG, with 2-D artwork. it's visually stunning, gameplay is fantastic, the story is very compelling. an absolute masterpiece. I still haven't played Grim Grimoire, which is made by the same company (Vanillaware). i can't wait for Muramasa to come out.

 

The Godfather II. So under-rated Dx

 

Vagrant Story - Same people who did FFXII and FF Tactics also part of the Ivalice universe as well

 

Golden Sun 1&2 - always felt hardly anyone knew about the series at all, it was so well made.
but now that a sequel is being made on the DS, hopefully this raises awareness of this game somewhat

 

I dislike 'not so easy/more complicated' games also. Civilization? No tnx. But EVE just kind of works once you get passed the initial learning curve *which is giant*. The rest of it, after you start making money/doing things, is just asking around. "Hey, I heard about this...what do I need to do?"

If you walk into the game thinking it sucks/too hard, you're going to hate it. Go in with an open mind.

 

You Civilization was far too complicated for my taste too CyberPitz.
