you guys need to play more supcom. you're probably too rigidly stuck to starcraft-like rts. you have no idea about supcom gameplay at all (style and strategies are totally different). to say that there are any ultimate units or units that have no purpose in existence (unless you play non-ranked games) already shows how little you know about supcom. you can say that you like starcraft better, but nothing else.

No, I've played the whole range of RTS games. And Supreme Commander sucks. And there are ultimate units. To say there are not doesn't even make sense. There is Tier 1 (useless), Tier 2 (mostly useless because people get to Tier 3 and rape these units easy with Tier 3 units), Tier 3 (Rape), and Tier 4 the special Tier (Oh you mean you wanted that base? Well my super special artillery took it out... or my giant fucking spider robots... or my giant fucking walking robots... or my giant fucking flying saucer... or my giant fucking super underwater carrier... or my giant fucking tactical nukes fired from subs... or my giant fucking super gunship)
And shit takes soooooooo long to build. I felt almost as bored as when I played Moon Project.

Once I won a game by building defenses around my base and the points I got, kept upgrading the defenses, and teched to the super artillery. And then I pounded the shit out of the enemy base. Because I could do that from the safety of my base. Luckily, they wasted their units trying to kill my defenses and didn't tech up to ultimates as fast as I did. Else the spider robots woulda killed me.

    By the way people
is unit veterancy a good idea? i.e. a unit could become better with more kill experience.
it's been used in games like company of heroes and rome total war, but not to a huge extent where experienced units/groups make an absolutely massive tip-unbalancing difference. i could easily see this idea having a nice taste on sc2, and would exponentially increase strategies and uses of units

    ewwww no unit veterency

although unit veterency helped me a lot in C&C 3 but this is too much warcraft. Also it'll be harder to make a veteran out of a zergling or marine anyways. Zealots can cause they have a lot of hp and a recharging shield. It would make things way too unbalanced. Upgrades, mass armies, and some units with special abilities is all you need.

but imagine if weak units like lings and rines get hardcore bonuses due to veterancy compared to large machines and monsters since the large ones are designed to mass-kill so few kills would matter much in teaching it how to fight better. imagine you managed to get a group of 12 SAS lings cause you got them each to get like 3 individual kills lol. and super-pro dozen-kill marines since there are medics. would be like pro-ownage :D not to mention faster-casting abilities and....faster mining scvs....!?

actually yeah im with ya against my own idea lol. but i wanna see it used very well in some game :(

Unit veterancy could be an interesting addition in doses... It could literally be an ability for that unit like a marine. Would add some incentive to paying for attention to your marines in order to try and beef them up. This could just be too much work though.

It doesn't fit with starcraft which is supposed to be large armies against large armies. Veterancy is more for squad based RTS games.

veterancy doesnt work and heres why.

SC is supposed to provide THE MOST BALANCED rts system.  by having veterancy, it allows for an amount of luck to take place, and where theres luck, there is NO skill.

HOWEVER, i did have a thought for veterancy, and it was this.

as units kill more and more enemys, they do level up, but not in the sence that they get bonuses ECT.  I was thinking more of a media.

say, when a rine hasn't killed anyone, he gives you a message of concern when he encounters the enemy, as he kills more enemy units, he gets more confident - all most hyped up on roids or w/e.

such messages that show boosted confidence while in combat ECT... might be a nice flavour that doesnt affect acctual gameplay??

    whats the point of that?
and veterancy has nothing to do with luck....it's about micro

there was some part of veterancy in SC1 for every unit wyth the KILLS number
but this time it would be something more, like a little changed textures

nah, veterancy isnt just micro. I do not deny that it could be part of micro.... but it would just be weak if a player could level up 5 marines that could wipe out anything with stim packs.... you know?

Well, if you could get those marines that buffed up I think you deserve them. It would be hard to keep them alive long enough to do that. You might get a lucky one in a group of marines that gets a few more kills than the rest. I don't have a problem with that marines doing a little bit more damage.

And then your super duper elite units get blown up by some brand new right out of the factory siege tank in siege mode.

    siege tank ? .. lame
the mothership or a nuke would be more efective

as I remember the veteran system from Red Alert 2 when after killing some untis an elite unit could shoot 2x faster and 3x stronger then the basic one plus the hp regeneration thing
    So I think I don't want it in SC2

Well... see... red alert 2 sucked so taking anything from that would probably be bad, very bad.
