Two things to be clear then:
    - I agree with you.
    - You have to be really unlucky, or really stupid to make a beta destroy your computer.

Agreed. There is basically no chance of it actually causing damage to your computer/OS, the unstable code would cause the PROGRAM to crash and not function properly, not your computer.

You know, I've seen a lot of discussion around this topic, and even after two days of searching carefully I've been unable to find anything to verify this.

I'm officially labeling this as a hoax.

Might as well tag it then as one. ;)

  5. How many hoaxes has StarCraftWire.net fallen for in the last two months?

    Where's my graphing calculator .....

    @Aurora: It was a misunderstanding then :D

It probably goes of the charts, don't bother checking it. ;)

    @ misunderstanding
Meh, those things happen at a forum. And why do people keep trolling about these things? They gain nothing from it. Maybe some site traffic, but they lose all their credibility this way. -Is even a word?- :s

  7. lol. As the creator of this mess (Superfux), I can tell you my original and subsequent posts are completely, factually correct. The images and those few strings do in fact exist on Blizzard's webserver. I'm afraid that denying that simple fact is quite ludicrous unless you allege their site was hacked. The content I link and refer to is hosted on Blizzard webspace; you can't argue with that.

However, the extent of my claim was simply that those things exist, and in subsequent posts I gave an example of how exactly it would look if somebody were to somehow obtain and register a "real" beta key at this very moment.

What conclusions everyone draws from these finds are to each their own. Considering the circumstances, I wouldn't say it absurd to expect a beta soon. How soon is that? A day, a week, a month. I don't claim to know..

As to the widely-reported claim that an the image changed from "pre-beta" to "beta" after I posted is not true. Another member pointed out that the images read differently for different regions (en-US, en-GB, de-DE, etc.) (Additional reasoning here: http://174.34.157.8/showpost.php?p=540399&postcount=36).

As usual, and not unexpectedly, this turned into one huge communication disaster. Things got blown out of proportion. Really, people? Really? They're images and some stylesheets on a website, not a sign of the apocalypse.

There are numerous assumptions that can be based upon this information. Some are very much within reason; others are obviously far-fetched and unbelievable. Whatever the factual basis of these assumptions, the original content that sparked this was, and still is, legitimate.

And so, I therefore find that combining these separate topics into one and labeling it a hoax is a little unfair to me and a little unfair to yourselves. I think you must trust your members to see the difference between the two and identify fact and fiction for themselves rather than you make that decision for them.

I am not someone who is for any fan site I just browse them all because I can't wait for sc2, but I find it very funny that members on this site try to bash scwire.net because they thought this was a hoax when all the websites with counters didnt get enough flack for there "hoax" Now you can say it was a joke on the people who thought it was a joke but that just sounds like a huge cop out to keep your fan base positive. which was a smart thing to do, but a flat out cover up. I don't know much about how to look up images on a website, but it does seem kind of real, but if it's not owell everyone fell for it.

I agree, this isn't a hoax so much as minor discovery and an ancompnying theory. I think the fact that the image is linked from a battle.net link says everything as far as quality of information goes. Thanks for thorough post on the subject Daniel.

@Delta it's fine if you dissagree with the way the countdowns played out but I can assure you that the joke on the non-believers wasn't a cop out. As for scwire I don't plan on speaking to much ill of another site but if the first thing I see when visiting a site is an advertisement for a credit report company, I am normally less than enthused. Also, I am pretty sure that scwire has been around longer than us, but you could take our top 3 posters and have more posts than they have on their entire site, I'll let you decide what that means.
