What's the game like? Is it good? Compare it to some other games.

 

From what I've read ranged classes are cross between an RPG and FPS, others will be more diablo-like in gameplay

 

I've only played the Marksman so far. I want to beat the game once before starting a new class and then I'll probably play the new class for part of the time and play my Marksman through nightmare for part of the time.

The Marksman is alot like a shooter. Technically, your chance to hit an enemy is based on your stats but it doesn't feel like that's the case, although you still need to be able to put your crosshair over the target. All the stats in the world won't help you if you aren't aming at the thing.

Marksmen do alot of running backwards as big bad hordes of melee guys come running after you. Even so, the Marksman has not real trouble dealing with the melee demons. They rarely hit me and most of them don't do all that much damage. Its only if they corner you that they become deadly. The true danger are the ranged enemies. For the most part they don't do much damage but you get hit by ranged attacks alot more often than by melee. So areas of high concentration of enemies are very dangerous. You have to do a lot of strafing and ducking behind cover to clear those sorts of places.

The best part about the gameplay is the high concentration of eneimes and the number of enemies you fight at one time. Fighting alot of dangerous enemies at once is quite exciting. Also boss fights are very fun since fighting them comes with a high chance of getting killed. I ran out of healthpacks just before I fought the act 2 boss, killing it with not health packs and without dying was a lot of fun. It was by no means easy but a lot of fun.

I don't really know what game to compare it to. It is instanced in the same way as guild wars but the gameplay is completely different. It has a lot of similarities with Diablo, for one thing I have warts leg in my stash. The game play with the marksman feels quite a bit like Painkiller except not quite to the same level as painkiller, sadly. Although, this is probably because hardcore mode in a game as nuts as painkiller would not work out well.

I wish I had time, must finish homework for my class tommorrow. Probably shouldn't be taking 5 min to check on forums but I can't stand doing homework for long periods without many many breaks.

 

Everyone playing marksman? Isn't engineer all that AND some? He's got ranged damage and have bots to keep monsters away. Plus when you give weapons to your bots you get about as much damage as marksman, but you can also have few elements at one time on them.

no there is a single player you can play all the way to the end and then again in nightmare. Its more like D2 in that sense. I haven't made a SP character yet though. I've just been playing my marksman online.
