I tried it when it first implemented as an option during beta. I was really enthusiastic about it at first, but T-to-attack was too hard to relearn. Also, I'm not a huge fan of the build and ability keys being on the bottom row.

I'm sure there's a sensible way of using some common buttons across all three races.

    eg, P = Probe/Drone/SCV, as it was with Peon/Peasant.

QWERT could be reserved for the (upto) five abilities of combat units, along with M=Move, S=Stop, H=Hold, A=Attack, P=Patrol. While B/V would remain as the build/advanced build abilities for workers.

Exactly- the hotkeys could make a lot of sense if Blizzard ever got around to making it happen. Customizable hotkeys would be even better.

    I'd do something more like:
QWERT: common special abilities: spells, building, macro abilities
ASDFG: Standard abilities (attack, stop, hold, move, patrol)
ZXCVB: uncommon special abilities: liftoff, salvage, load/unload, burrow

I've been using this for a while now, and it's awesome.
At first (as I posted previously) it was hard to get used to the T to attack move, but it's not so bad once you get used to it. I'd still prefer fully customizable hotkeys, though.

Yes it's changed from W to Y (with QWERT). Idk if you use the right side of your keyboard though but it's not that hard to press Y Q+shift to spam some zealot or Y W+shift to spam stalker, etc...

It's not that hard to relearn from the standar hotkey actually, after a week, you will be more and more confortable with it and it's kinda a lot easyer for a random player like me to use that. Don't have to learn every hotkey for all the races that way.

k, i've been trying it out for a while and it actually works pretty well. however, i'm finding my pinky is getting too much of a workout, lol. i'd rather have everything (or nearly everything) reversed. keep T for attack, but also make T build worker, B and V for build and advanced build, etc. so it keeps everything near my index finger, which is much more dextrous.

early game seems to be all pinky work- build workers, build barracks/gateway, build marines, etc...

I would never mutilate my keyboard for a game ^^ And memorizing hotkeys really isn't that hard imo. And I'm no pro either.

You don't need to destroy your keyboard, that's just a silly thing the OP wanted to try.

Yes hotkeys for Starcraft 2, that's a must need indeed for fast gaming and better performance in the game. INTERFACE HOTKEYS, BUILDING HOT KEYS, UPGRADING HOTKEYS, UNITCONTROL HOTKEYS... Talking about something HOT, thats a lot. Time is gold so the one who holds the fastest finger is equipped with the edge to win.

That creeped me out a little bit. I just imagined some guy holding a frenzied finger(without a hand to support it) trying to keep it from running away or falling to the floor...

Man, how sick was that? :O
