That in my opinon is what everyone posting in this thread deserves. Theres no fourth playable race, so knock it off with theories.

The UED are not a race. They are a separate faction of the existing human race just as the Terran are. The only difference between them is that the UED and the Terran are separated by an immense amount of space and that fact that Earth isn't very far in technology developed for war. So, to make them a new race is not possible and as a new Faction, although possible, is far less likely than what we would believe. You can still hope, but, I would not get so much hope. Sorry.

i read somewhere or heard in an interview that the UED has more POWERFUL weapons back on earth. in broodwar they only stole the bc, goliaths etc from one of the terrans port station or something and use it against them. <- not really a good excuse why both terran and UED have the same technology. but its ok with me knowing that UED has different units etc.

and as stated the UED has not brought their own weapons from earth in duggales exploration. only the valkerys.

and they said that UED will TRY to return and bring their uber weapons with them if that happens and i wanna see the UED blast the zerg into oblivion. =p

hell no. they are not just another human faction. THEY ARE POWERFUL and more "high tech" than the terran. in 2 or 3 days im going to post here my own UED race with units and mechanics. =p

Its only me or actually the UED are terrans? Zeratul...the UED is not a new race even if u give them a superhypertoaster with a plasma beam cannons. Only way to separate them is removing name "terrans" and making 2 new different human sides f.e UED and Koprulu.

They're right to not add a fourth race.

The only place you'll see anything different than Zerg, Terran, and Protoss is in the single player campaigns and possibly in UMS maps.

Having four races presents way too much of a balancing problem, as can be seen from looking at Warcraft 3. It becomes so difficult that eventually you have to compromise on the individual characteristics of the different units. So pretty much at each level of unit for the different races you have basically the same unit. Like the Footman versus the Grunt. They're basically the same unit with a different skin.

Three races allows you to maintain distinct characteristics of each race and balance different abilities.

To play to SC3, you'll need to wait for ten more years, my friend.
Indeed there will be a fourth race in SC3.
But I think and hope that the fourth race will appear in the expansion set. But than to name that expansion set as an expansion set, let's name it SC3 no ? With a forth race, that couldn't be names an expansion set ...

    understood ?

Althought I strongly think that there will only be four playable races in Starcraft II, it would be very cool to have a new race. If it was between the Hybrids and Xel'Naga, I would go for Xel'Naga. I kind of think they would feel to much like the Protoss in a way because of the spiritual and technological knowledge, but if Blizzard could pull it off then I would prefer the Xel'Naga over the Terran/Zerg Hybrids. Playing Hybrids would certainly be interesting to see what crazy advancements the vicious beasts of the Zerg would have. It would make more sense to introduce Protoss technology to Zerg units, rather than the other way around. If you had a Protoss with some Zerg in it, it would be able to regenerate but I can't think what other unique characteristics of the Zerg would show in the Hybrids (if it was a Protoss crossed with a little bit of Zerg). But a Zerg with some Protoss in it would be wicked. Still the savage swarms but they could have psionic capabilities to cast spells, generate shields, cloak units and maybe even warp.

I don't even know why this thread is going. A fourth race for SC is just absurd.

But the UED is a Terran faction, so they are from earth and therefore they already are with the human race. How can they be another race. :S

But the Xel'Naga will be far to powerful compared to the rest of the races, and they seem to have left the area a long time ago and personally I can't think of any reason to return so suddenly. They originally left because the Zerg were becoming way to powerful and out of control, so coming back to interfere in the war would seem really weird to me.

As for the hybrids, I think it would be most logical for the combination of all three races, as the Zerg are known to assimilate a bit of every race they stumble upon. (that's how they have managed to get most of their current units anyway). But I guess a race like that would become far to complicated to handle and balance.

/\ however Zeratul in the blizzcon unveiling of the new campaign mode said that the Xel'Naga had returned. So even if they are not a playable race, they will have some major effect on the game.

Blizzard explored the option of a fourth race, but as I've said in other threads you can't have a fourth race and maintain the uniqueness of all of them. It would end up just like WC3 where all the units are basically the same. That's the only way they can be balanced. Some have different abilities, but their HPs and attack points are all the same. The tech trees look the same except with different building skins and unit names.

Yeah, Jon's got it spot on. Regardless of balancing, it would be silly, the triangle of choice is better than the square of choice, just sounds better ;). There was a link that discussed this in further detail, some AzN pro-player for both SC and Wc3.
