Lock picking is easy as hell. Big guns aren't insanely hard to find. Just keeping them stocked with ammo is a little more difficult.

Big guns are rather pointless to raise above 40 or so unless you have large amounts of STR and END on your char. The only horrendously useful one is the Minigun and Gatling Laser (or does this fall under Energy? Never checked).

Small guns is generally the best weapon skill to go for unless you have high INT, in which case Energy Weapons are.

    Medicine is very useful.

    Speech is good.

    Barter is kinda pointless imo

Science nets you some cool look and it's good for the robot levels.

    Sneak is excellent.

Lockpicking is amazingly useful, I always through it as one of my tag skills. Basically, you move the bobby pin and turn the screw driver. The further it turns, the closer you are to the 'sweet spot' that the pin needs to b in to unlock the whatever.

Energy weapons are my fave, cause the best easily attainable weapon in the game is a plaz rifle.

    Speech, I already touched on.

    Can I bump this? D:

MAAAAAAAAN this game is so good. I just beat it with a good guy, tags on energy weapons, science and speech. I did about 40% of sidequests and explored about half the map. I have a whopping 94 DR with MedX (fully repaired tesla armor and helm + all DR enchancing perks) and I maxed energy, which seemed stupid at the beggining of the game but later on it rocks.
Im currently dowloading the DLC's, which are the perfect excuse to start over with an evil character. That is, choosing the 'good side' on quests, but compensating with lots of stealing and probably cannibalizing.
I'll probably raise sneak to maybe 50 just to see the exploding pants thingie

Don't take cannibalism. Soooo not worth the trouble. Basically, you gain a small amount of health and lose one Karma. However, if you have any 'Good' (Star Paladin Cross and I think Fawkes) aligned characters, they'll flip out at you. Plus when you 'activate' a corpse while crouching, it asked you if you want to eat them or if you want to loot them. Every. Single. Time.

Currently, I'm playing an evil character. It's kinda cool, I've set up my char so can play just about any role. If I want to tank, I throw on my Hellfire Armor (obtainable in the Broken Steel DLC) and shoot up some MedX for 85 DR (no DR perks). If I wanna be sneaky, I throw on the Chinese Stealth Suit (obtainable from the Operation: Anchorage DLC) and Poplar's Hood for lovely +25 to my already maxed out Sneak skill. And, if I just want to kill ****, I throw on my Hellfire Armor, pull out my Autofiring, Extended Clip Terribly Shotgun, pop some Psycho, Yao Guai Meat, and Ghoul Flesh for a pretty awesome 2025 per shot. I'm pretty sure that number isn't right, but I pretty much have to be right in their face.

Anyways. I'm halfway through level 29 (should level with my next Mutant Blood Sample turn in) and am pretty much death incarnate.

Do you have the Xbox or PC version Mael?

    PC Version here.

Ok just started my new char. Tags on lockpicking, speech and small weapons. I installed the bomb on Megaton, and then killed the Sheriff to get his clothes and the keys to his house. Then I took the STR bobblehead from his house and, while the entire city was shooting at me, I entered the armory and stole all the weapons *-*.
Then I left, and killed Dr. something (the merchant) and looted like 800 caps very very early game.

Now I'm headed to Tempenny tower to see the kaboom *-*

And.. yeah, the Terrible Shotgun is definitely my favorite close range weapon. I didn't know you could upgrade it like that though o_o Does that become available once you install the DLCs?

And BTW thanks for the cannibalism tip, that menu that pops up sounds pretty damn annoying

Me and my brother both play this game a lot. I enjoy the PC version more because you have access to the console and of course can mod it. Modding takes the game to a whole new level. Luckily bethesda is one of those few companies who actually support modding of their games. Which unlocks a lot of cool things. For instance there is a mod out there where you can start out as an Enclave soldier. Along with another where you fight the chinese who are invading. Right now me, my brother, and a few friends (Along with a ton of other modders :p) are trying to make vehicles for it. Also if anyone knows how to or is interested in getting involved. We are making a mod for starcraft where zerg toss and terrans are replaced by brother hood of steel, enclave, and either mutants or slavers.

Yeah, i do. It's a great game. I've played every single DLC pack too. I'm anticipating for future dlc packs and most definitely Fallout: Vegas. It's nice to have a different setting, though with the destitute of the fallout world, i doubt we'll see much difference in the game environment, prehaps a few slot machines here and there?

Hahaha just that one to give me a head start. I won't kill any other merchs promise D:

Anyway... how did you get the terrible shotgun then? AFAIK you can only get it by killing sweet jack or something (the merchant dude in evergreen mills I think, where you find the barter bobblehead)

And I just made a little research, and found that addon you were talking about. But uhm.. is it balanced enough? It sound a little bit too imba imo

Why not kill merchants? I don't do it, but am now seriously considering it. I've never actually bought anything vital from them, not even on the hardest difficulty. Buying and selling in Rivet City is enough.

GmG, have you upgraded them in Canterburry Commons? The arms dealer starts selling Mini Nukes, .308 rounds, and .44 magnum rounds. IMO it's worth it for just those three ammo types. The chem dealer is also pretty useful, as stimpaks on the cheap are great.

@Mael - It doesn't really make them imba, there's drawbacks. For instance, the autofire thing kills the accuracy, degrades it quicker, and increases the spread. I almost have to be close enough to kiss them to one shot them with the TS. The silencer reduces regular damage (though I think it increases sneak attacks - not sure).
Happy Jack isn't what I meant, though you can get it without killing him. I mean the traveling merchants witht he Brahmin
