Each marine is armed with a C-14 "Impaler" Gauss Rifle. The rifle propels an 8 mm "spike" at hypersonic speeds through the use of electro-magnets.

Given the immense rate of fire, they're much more effective than your standard DoW Lasgun.
On a sidenote, Protoss units already use a lot of laser/beam weaponry.

I agree that the Terran should be using energy based weapons because of the point they are at in time. I would say that it comes down to changing the philosophy behind weapons. Instead of using energy to utilize matter, why not just utilize energy?

Although, I disagree on the application of lasers. I think that light has it's moments here and there but I think more powerful energy based weapons can be used. Kind of like the Protoss... mmm, blue photon balls of death....

I would hate it if the Terran started usin lasers. That aspect is almost TOO star wars-ish to me. What's the point of switching to lasers? As we can see, the guns that they have now are very effective, I just don't see the point in using a laser if there's no obvious advantage to them. Also, I'm guessing that it's not laser they use, i think its plasma, because a laser is just a concentrated beam of late goin in one direction.

why cauterize a wound with a laser when you can leave gigantic, grapefruit-sized exit wounds with bullets?

Very true, nukes are expensive. But if we gear all of our technology research to energy based weapons, something the size of a nuke would be relatively inexpensive.

Next few decades? Isn't SC2 around like 2299? They should have guns that point at things and then whatever they point at just self combusts by the time of SC2...I mean I'm just sayin....

Na, look gauss cannon up, we are pretty close to acutally having them, the only problem is the level of magnetisation, if it is undermagnetized the projectile will be propelled with minimal foce, if it is overmagnatized the projectile will lose electrons therefore become unmagnatic and fail to fire.

Its hard for a hand held rifle to measure the precise level of magnetisation required.

yea i felt like I seen like demonstrations of it on the History Channel or Discovery Channel about this. It's really cool. They had an absurd rate of fire and velocity.

I understand, let me clarify....If the marines use gauss rifles in SC2 and we will have them in a couple of decades...what does that tell you about the adavncement of weapons technology in the two centurys since the first incorporation of gauss rifles?

Yea, ive been watching weapons of the future alot, they also have a sonic weapon that emits such a boom that it can disrupt the function of internal organs leading to massive internal hemmorage.

It tells me that (if we where in that age) we could afford to equip everysingle marine with a gauss rifle and depleted uranuim without crippling out economy, so yeah, theres been a HUGE advance.

yup and technological advances would become much more slower rather than our current exponential increase unless we figured out some new dimension or acquire some alien techonology.
