What about the universes of the Lord of the Ring (it is science-fiction, fantasy ok, but science-fiction anyway), the Matrix, Terminator, Aliens, Predator, Fallout, Appleseed, Gunnm, Cowboy bebop, Warhammer 40K etc?

Starwars is especially the most overrated sci-fi universe to me.

I think Starcraft has the potential to reach around the same level of popularity, but Blizzard is much known for the efficiency of the gameplays of their games and of their online applications, than for the storytelling of their universes and their advertising and merchandising.

  3. StarCraft needs movies, and children's toys first.. Oh, and Lego StarCraft .. Then it might be possible

I doubt Starcraft will be as popular. Gaming in general doesn't cater to as large an audience, and RTS games have an even smaller crowd. They would have to expand the franchise significantly with movies, books, etc. The problem with that is that that would mean Blizzard would have to cater to a casual, mainstream audience with their games being shallower and less skill-oriented. Not to mention that there's a social stigma associated with gamers (nerds, geeks, you know what I'm talking about). It's not impossible, but it will take a LOT of effort on Blizzard's behalf for a result that may or may not be good.

    ... and comics,
... and bundles with food packages,
    ... and more fan sites,
    ... and more roleplay rulebooks,
... and more video games, of different types (click and play, FPS, etc)...

... Finally, I like better Starcraft the way it is now: in progress, slowly growing, but still under control, and not accessible to the masses.

    Yes.
Funny how some people, who can spend their whole week-ends watching TV "Sports", and/or get high with packs of beer, can tell about gamers.
Being nerds may not be the best thing, but it's definitely not the worst choice to me.

starcraft will not be able to get as big as starwars, the main reason being the centering of starwars around storytelling and the like, with starcraft, for obvious reasons, being focused on gameplay.

out of all the star series starcraft is differently the 2nd best...

But what happened if starcraft came first? then starwars??!

Look at Final Fantasy 7. Game was popular, then the company made toys, anime, sequel and prequel games, and even an movie. They were pretty successful. No other Final Fantasy games have been as successful as Final Fantasy 7.
What im trying to say is, anyone is able to do it (even blizzard) but a dam lot of hard work is needed.

StarCraft will be better then starwars, because starwars is lame as hell. Over played, over refferenced to.

In my books, StraCraft is already a million times bigger then starwars.

    And Necro post much?

I don't really like starwars, and I love starcraft, BUT, I don't think starcraft is or will ever be bigger than starwars.

I'm being realistic here, its just a game, its known by gamers, while starwars is a world wide phenomenon, I mean, I will never consider starcraft bigger than starwars unless I see a bunch of retards in starcraft costumes at at events like, conventions, movie theaters, weddings, etc...

If they ever decided to put Starcraft into a movie, it might actually be a good idea. If they set uit up with a proper storyline, I would likely go see it. Then again...it all depends on who's directing as well.

Set it up so I can watch! =D

Starcraft can't be bigger than Starwars on multiple points.

    One point makes it even truer;

    LORE

This 4 letter word as been expanding for StarWars each and single years the day the first movie hit the theatre and is still growing today, and will continue to evolve for a long long time.

Stacraft happens to be an awesome game with awesome lore, but its expansion and community is so small compared to the head start that Starwars already have.

There’s no way it can catch up on lore alone (which is the backbone of any franchise). sadly....
    :(

Just in the gaming industry, the number of games called Starwars that got out between SC1 and SC2 (even if the quality was not that good) is just something that Blizzard can’t keep pace on with their standards of quality. (Which is good for us, no crappy game!)

Just because something has MORE fans it doesn't necessarily make it a bigger phenomenon. I mean, look at how many people casually play WOW, versus those afflicted souls who dress up in Star Wars gear. Its the depth of feeling that matters too. The Star Wars movies were based on archetypal myth cycles, which affects people more deeply than the added on lore of a game.

Even if you expand the franchise to include movie + novels, your'e still fighting with history. Firstly, people will know that Starcraft was originally a game, and everything is basically a prosthetic for more popularity, while, on the hand, Star Wars was originally intended to be art and affected people deeply from its first manifestation. Also, historically, its the first real sci-fi/ fantasy realm to be popularly exploited using electronic media. Anything Starcraft achieves will still be compared to its ancestor.

Also, to Zeratul, what do you consider 'hardcore sci-fi'?. Personally, I consider Star Wars to be just fantasy; there really isn't anything 'science' about it. While Star Trek is actually more 'hard core' science fiction because each episode and the whole premise of the show deals with 'what ifs' of science and society, projected forward from our own universe, not a fantastical one, far, far away.

Yeah but again(and forgive the redundancy) how many wow fans do you see like this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZ5HUmunDbk&feature=related

In my mind, those millions of wow players are just that, players, people who like wow, while the starwars fans are fans, they don't like it, they love it. Fans are one thing, fanatics are another...

To me it's really easy why Star Wars is bigger on most of the world. Apart from Korea of course.

In Starcraft you love the Terrans or the Zerg. The race as a whole. And there's not much emphasis on the individual characters. Sure some people will disagree with me. Sure there is a little with the storyline. But in the missions you just use whatever unit you need to to win. It's like we are controlling a whole large force with a few standout characters.

But in Starwars it's the individual characters that win us over. it was Han, Luke, R2D2 etc that took down the Death Star from the inside. It's like we are controlling or watching a few great characters that are part of a bigger whole. Be it the rebels or the evil empire.

In one we have to work as individuals to change what ever empire we are in. And in the others we control the empire and cam make the changes as we wish.

But I do like the idea in SC 2 how they are giving little between mission parts to give the characters more life. So we can relate to them more. In saying that though I did feel for fenix died and was made into a Dragoon in SC 1. But that was it really.

And WOW is so popular is the same reason. Unlike WC3, in WOW you are get to control only one person and not a whole race. So you can feel for your character. Cause it's hard to feel for an entire race of people or aliens.

What do you consider being a WoW addict?

Yes, definitely. The most important is not how much people enjoy what you enjoy, the most important is that you enjoy it yourself.

    Fortunately I would say.
I don't want merchandising shops in every city, selling Starcraft T-shirts and Starcraft toys and Starcraft drinks and Starcraft music CD and Starcraft comics and Starcraft paint set and Starcraft posters and Starcraft books and Starcraft lights and Starcraft models and Starcraft figurines and Starcraft roleplay games etc. I don't want everybody I can meet to know who is Jimmy Raynor or Sarah Kerrigan, I don't want every kid I meed to want to be a terran marine or a zerg lurker or I don't know. I just want Starcraft to be a good RTS with a friendly and efficient online platform.
Let the sh#tty and retro and clichés-infested Starwars meat to the masses. Save Starcraft from all those nerds who dream of being a Jedi and to victoriously and very easily slaughter tons of storm troopers and to do then Princess Leia or Queen Amidala. I want to keep meeting hardcore gamers, not no-life nerds. At least hardcore gamers achieve something. And they can beat me in a balanced game that enables advanced strategies.
