Maybe zerglings can smell the enemy or have heat vision. It was so cool when the colosus pwned the missle turrents. What was with that? It wasted like a second to kill each one of them. Can anyone explain that? And I think that terran will have it hardest at night. After all, they are all ranged and live indoors while protoss and zerg live in the environment and everything. Terran are defending durring the night while attacking durring the day. Zealots are going to be like elites with energy swords and camoflouge lol.

That video was just a demostartion of the lighting effects one of their programmers did so I think it was purely for Aestheics.

Th background enivroment does having movable parts to it, don't you remember when they first showed it and the asteorids and everything floating around in the background of the space platform? I thought that was pretty cool.

How would they do the cycle on maps that don't have day or night such as space platform? Then if you had a race that depended on the night for things wouldn't they be at a disadvantage to say a race that doesn't such as the Terran? So I think that if they do add day/night to the game that it should be purely for looks. That would make thngs alot more simple and still add a neat aspect to the game regardless.

either its only for the look(visual) OR a new mechanic that affect gameplay of each race is fine with me as long as they include day and night cycle. its the best environment effect ever.

you shouldn't add to much to the day night thing, i mean it's starting to feel like WoW and warcraft with the fear, night time buffs, and etc. I think just leaving it so the vision is shorter is the best bet. It's very starcrafty too.

yeah I don't like the idea of units buffs or the "fear" factor of zergs popping up, but do like the vision reduction

I think that they should have a level in SC2 that makes you want to wet yourself, like Ravenholm from HL2.

It should be in an installation that has been infested, and you have the entire layout of the installation revealed, but there are no lights. Let's say its a level with Jim and Zeratul and some zealots, and the only light is from Jim's powersuit...you'd have to make your way through the installation and fulfill the objectives but you could only see a good ways in front of you when Jim was looking in that direction. They could also do some of the effects that you were talking about before with the psi-blades glowing in the dark...and it would have to be infested with zerglings, so that they would have to run into the vision range of the zealots/Zeratul and not attack you from range as hydras or something. That would be siiiiiiick

    any proponents?

I say we stay away from anything too WC3 ish. It is tried and done with and we shouldn't forget what makes Starcraft, Starcraft.

I think the developers wanted SCII to be Huge Armies and Fast Game Play, like constant adrenaline and huge armies that tear each other new ones.

If you add nighttime you are slowing the game down by a large margin. Most people don't want to attack during the night and nighttime might turn out be a camp time or build time, increasing game times. The opposite might be true as well.

A Zerg might attack of night to increase success or take advantage of bonuses. People attack when they are strongest so they will attack during either nighttime or daytime, slowing the game down by 50%.

Also, isn't it weird that a whole day would pass during a game? Doesn't it make much more sense to have the map EITHER night or day and not both?

For example, in the campaign video where Raynor gets the artifact. Does it make any sense that a day should pass? Wouldn't a bunch of Protoss show up if it took a day or more to get that artifact, since it is so important?

Multilayer games would be the same thing. I never imagined Starcraft battles to be spread over many days. It seems the units pop out and they get to the battle. Having night means Terran units would need to sleep too, otherwise they would collapse from lack of sleep, kinda cuts down in the realistic factor.

I rather go with high octane hard action then have a night element, UNLESS the entire map is fought at night. I don't see cycles making sense but a night map would rock for a hero + units running through an instillation map or say a night time strike against a zerg colony.

For me it is either or, not both.

Thinking of professional gaming, having night and day cycles could really affect the strategies and probally not for the better. It is best to have either it be a night time map or a day time map.

I do think having nighttime is cool though, especially with the graphic and effects they can pull off, like the flash light!

well dude that's why we are saying that there should be no stat bonuses; I think the only thing that changes should be the vision

btw I just want to let anyone who reads this know, that as soon as you say something like this:
totally discredits and/or nullifies your entire point. This is a game about aliens in space. The realism argument (to some degree) is null and void ;D.

Sorry to kinda pick on you Darkmer, it wasn't my intention, and welcome to the forums! have a !

I was amazed that they actually wanted to put it in SC2. It would be a very nice addition to emulate the environment of a (let's say) space platform that is in shadow of some planet (so no sun light or w/e).

It would be great to be able to set it as "Day" and "Night" through the trigger in the UMS (so I could simply put it in Cat n Mouse maps :-D )

i dont know if yall have ever heard of this game but, Wargasm was an awesome computer game. the best thing about it was the music changed pace and volume depending on what was going on in the screen; this would be awesome for SC2, when you are sitting around its just kinda nice and slow and soft, but as a battle starts somewhere the music begins to speed up and volume increases until a full fledged battle and loud fast music. oh wow that game makes me wanna cry just thinking about how i lost the cd :(. anyways i would love to have this feature in the game especially if they are gonna have some classical music as a music option

Yeah, that sounds like a cool idea. Why hasn't anyone told me why those missle silos were blown up so easily?

well the gameplay may change at night but only a bit and players should learn to adapt at the new mechanics during night. its a new mechanic and add on for starcraft that will bring it to the next level and become the ultimate rts game ever. i really think that it will add up more strategy and skills among players even how complicated it may seem.

i love the idea. and if blizzard will include it i know they will find a way to balance it and not affect gameplay TOO much. just some advantages and disadvantages here and there.

i think its a brilliant idea, as long as they work hard on the lighting.

I'm totally down with the day/night thing. I agree with just about everyone in that I don't want stats to change at all. In fact, I don't really want vision to decrease all THAT much. It should be dimmer, yes, but not so you can't see your own hands in front of your face.... I still want to be able to see stuff moving, but maybe dim enough that you could miss a stealthy army purposely trying to avoid sight.

It would add a great "sneak attack" aspect to the game.

The only downside to night would be that people WOULD become more defensive, but they also become defensive in regular SC1 in daytime, so.... that's just something good players will have to get past. That means that at night, newbs will die in huge numbers ;).

I do think that maybe air attacks should be put at a disadvantage in some way at night.... i.e. the ships are extremely visible, etc.... I don't think it's fair if a group of motherships (or w/e) is moving around in the dark and suddenly appears. I wouldn't be as upset about a large army showing up. Maybe ships could have a disadvantage of having to reduce speed in order to avoid obstacles.

if all unit get the same reduce vision at night how can you execute a sneak attack plus units automatically reacts or fire the moment they see your "steathty army".

i really dont understand your point tho. if you mean dim by units moving in fog of wars and reduce visions will not allow you to see them directly. thats actually what ive been saying all along. ^^

thats why terran gets the advantage from flash lights etc. you can attack a zealot(reduce vision at night) if the zealot is in range of your flash light. well the zealot cant actually fight back he needs to move up to the marine and when the zealots finally sees the marines then it can attack. yah some avantages and disadvantages examples at night.

i hope they go crazy with the terrain though, like make it able to employ tatics like busting ramps to prevent banelings and stuff that is really really cool to see in a replay :p. the day and night will be a bonus to such events.

on a side note an rts game called command and conquer 3 did the if you hit the tank at the back it takes more damage so flanking is essential for victory. but the maps they had was pretty badly made.

Wow. I like your ideas and the movie. Thanks for spreading us this.

    My opinion on your ideas:

What i like about your ideas are that they are really balanced and all, but they lack skill. I mean, if you get the zergling rush, then it's going to be hard to outrun a 2x faster zergling with marines. Etc.

But yet again its good. I think they should make the shadow make zerg flying units more faster, because it would be harder to spot a flying guardian than a zergling therefor they should get an increase. But when they come near any terran, protoss air's they go back to average speed, and in the day time they do aswell.

    Thanks, Inside Sin
