Giving Collosus an air attack is like giving Banshees an air to air attack. There must be a reasons why it didnt get it. Also in the first broadcasted 2 vs 2 match a couple of Collosi and several Stalkers totally owned the day, the Terran player used vikings to attack collosos but they arrived to late and in to small numbers to make a difference.

Thinking there "must" be a reason for something is not necessarily an explanation.
Anyways, I think Colossus is already "weak" and vulnerable enough, so instead of giving it an anti air attacks, maybe remove its air vulnerability. But that's just my opinion.

Well, Collosos are one of the game strongest units when used in groups and supported by Stalkers they are deadly. The reason why it can be attack by anti air is probely to balance its cliffclimbing skills, how is players (particellry Terran since manned bunkers eat supply) able to defend agianst a massive damage to ground unit that can attack from any direction?
Also giving it an air attack would make it far to powerfull since players would mass collosos only and dont build any Stalkers or similar units. I would be like giving a Siege Tank cliffclimbing skills, remove minimun range and and give it a extra air attack = total overpowered. The reason why I mentioend Bansees earlier is that they are quite similar to Colloses in form of being mobile and powerfull groundattack (ok Bansees do less damage but got cloaking instead) and open to air attacks (ok collosos can also be hit by ground attacks but on the other hand they still lots of damage and can cold their own agianst most groundunits).

    re

Collosus from what I have seen so far are not a strong unit despite being so large. Just a few hits and down they go.

The Colossus has more than twice the HP of a Siege Tank, for the same price. It's only weak if you're willing to call the Siege Tank extremely weak. There's more to a unit than the number of hits it can take before going down.

Lets not only take the sheer number of HP into account, but also the dmg they take. For example, Viking does 20+20 against massive aerial units. Colossus would take a direct 40 dmg from each hit (it would be like being hit by a DT, but from a distance). with is totally insanely "weak". Marauder would do 24 dmg each hit (not counting stim though, not sure if it has it).

So yeah, it's weak because of the Terran dedicated units that deal massive damage. In any case, the first SC was really catastrophic in terms of balance and competitive play, and it took lots of patches (and many years) to make everything right. I wouldnt be surprised if the same happened to SC2. Even the beta itself wont fix everything. It will take a lot of online "gaming experience".

Collosos are designed to work in groups and supported by other units. Does not Protoss also have high damage units? DT for exameple does almost 50 damage to every ground unit and are premently cloaked? Immortlas does 20 + 20 agianst armored units while have have hardened shiels to reduce damage from most units to 10. Void Rays are also good.

Also, Collosos has 1 in armor so Vikings will do 2 less damage :)

The reason the Collosus is vulnerable to air is because it is so ridiculously good against ground.
You compare it to the Thor, and the thing is, is that the Thor get's wrecked by small ground Units, and is good against air. Collosi are amazing against small ground units and terrible against air. It's a system of counters and balances, and giving the Collosus an air attack would be bad.

Just think of it this way.

    Thor
    Good against air.
    Bad against ground.

    Collosus
    Terrible against air.
    AMAZING against ground.

Why make one of the most powerful yet balanced unit over powering by adding air attack to it? Once extended thermal lance is upgraded, it can out range most of the ground units with whooping 40 damage without upgrade, oh did I mention that it does splash damage? It can walk up and down cliffs, it's hitpoint and shield isn't bad, and IT RIPS THROUGH TIER ONE AND TWO UNITS LIKE NOTHING IS THERE. It's good they made Colossus both air and ground unit because of its' power and they shouldn't touch it any more.

When a colossi are built they're meant to be built with an army. They were never meant to be built so that they can move alone in compact units. They can be used that way, however, with a little bit of micro and luck, they could be prove to be a great back door killer for expansions. Putting anti-air on the colossi would just make Protoss too OP. Even though I like the thought of having my main race being OP, I'd rather have it so that I can have fun with them playing with same or other races on equal grounding.
