ooooooo i guess my maths sucks o_O
my first attempt was what you were looking for but couldnt get it. and yeah kinda obvious you start from Q since everything is based from it. but Q could only be 0, 1, 2 but ummm none of those figures seemed to work out for me. ill be back to try again soon o_O

damn power your the smartest person so far!

you actualy figured something out unlike every1 else lol

keep working after you get the first number the rest fall into place

edit: oh and remember its not 0 hehe should make it ez if you listened to power

Re: Brain teaser / puzzle corner

Ah, I misunderstood your question. I thought you meant it as an algebraic expression.

The answer would then be q=2, w=1, e=9, r=7, t=8. 21978 x4 = 87912, satisfying the condition qwert*4=trewq. Typing the answer is actually more confusing than the problem itself, cuz I used abcde instead. :p

Now the explanation. The "x4" part was the key for me.

It is a PowerkickasS says, q can only be either 0, 1, or 2, because anything 3 and higher would yield a 6 digit value when multiplied by 4. It can't be 1 because nothing x4 will give a number that ends in 1, it can only be a even number.

It also can't be 0 because it would require t to be a number that will give you a product that ends in 0 for the last digit after you x4, there is only 5(and 10, but can't be 10 because that requires you to have more than one 0 in qwert). If you plug in 0 and 5 into q and t, then you know q is not 0, because there is nothing you could have for the rest of the variables that will give you 5xxx2, it won't go that high.

That just leave 2 for q. When q is 2, t can only be either 3 or 8, to give you a product that ends in 2. It is obviously not 3 because it won't work in 2wer3*4=3rew2 because it's too low a value after 2 x4. So t is 8.

Now we're left with 2wer8*4=8rew2. Now w has to be lower than 3, 2 or lower, to keep t=8 after the x4. It's not 2 because it's already used. So it can only be 0 or 1. Since 8x4=32, if you consider the fact that the 3 carries over after t*4=32, if w is 0 then r would be something that ends in 7 after x4, nothing gives you that so it's not 0. We're left with w=1.

Now we have 21er8*4=8re12 so far. To have w=1 in trewq, r can only be something that gives you a product that ends in 8 after x4 because adding the carried over 3 would give you 1 only if it's 8. Your choices are 2 and 7, but 2 is already used. So r=7.

Now we have 21e78*4=87e12, you can just plug in other unused numbers from 0 to 9 and quickly find the answer. But you know it's not any of the lower numbers because w=1, and after w*4 you're left with a 7 for r on the other side, meaning e is something that yields a product with 3 as it's first digit after x4. It's either 8 or 9, 8 is used, so it's 9.

Re: Brain teaser / puzzle corner

wow lol this is easy. XD i just finished algebra class XD i hope i remember stuff now that's it's the summer.

    qwert
    x4
    =trewq

    q=0 w-1 e-2 r-3 t-4

therefore 0X4=0 :p okok that was pretty cheap ok i'll figure out the real answer XD

    qwert
    x4
    =trewq

wait a second. that's not possible if you dont use 0 thats like saying 1X4=1. i mean if qwert = X (making it one variable so it's a whole lot easier to understand ) then trewq has to = X also since it is multiplying. so you are trying to say 4X=X that's not even possible. are you trying to say

    (q+w+e+r+t)
    X4
    =t+r+e+w+q

??....wait wait that's impossible also... that just like what i said before. "no solution" is the only answer because what you're trying to say is 4=0...

Edit: ... ok nevermind Remy got it. WTF dude the way you wrote the question is impossible write it like this next time. i could got that >< the way you wrote it wouldn't even work, you'd have to multiply the way you wrote it.

    4[(10000q)+(1000w)+(100e)+(10r)+(t)]
    =
    [(10000t)+(1000r)+(100e)+(10w)+(q)]

    ...

Re: Brain teaser / puzzle corner

    Is your's serious PowerkickasS?

If it is, are you saying you can only have one value for ? that satisfies all three equations? It don't think that's possible, unless it's somehow a trick question.

If not all of the ? have to be the same number then I don't really get the point.
