Adding on to Hadeans post, It should be noted that Zeratul went searching for Artanis and the other Protoss remnants in the Dark Origin scenarios.

Also i read SC Legacy quotes. "Artanis and the Protoss survivors returned
to Shakuras to begin rebuilding their once
glorious civilization... " thats a part of the epilogue for broodwar.

As proven, artanis isn't dead. Something doesn't have to die before you yell "for X!!!"

Now, if they started saying "En Taro Artanis," then he'd be dead.

I doubt that Artanis is dead, but it's a shame if he were the actual 'leader' for the entire Protoss species. I kind of miss the Conclave's Judicators, they're a bunch of aristocrats that cling to their ancient codes of the Khala, but they have the sense of authority. Artanis is still a young Praetor, it's like watching the 11-year-old boy which is supposed to be the King of Stormwind in WarCraft. I really like Artanis, but he's not fit to be the leader for the -entire- Protoss race, I'd rather see those ruthless Judicators in that position.

Besides, arrogance and pride adds some inherent flaws to the Protoss and more value to their storyline, which make them more interesting than the generic "almighty-superior technology-psionic potent-ass kick" race.

Artanis is going to be the best hope for the protoss. During the campain they really set him up for being the ultimate leader, he is unafraid to get his hands dirty in battle (just the right amount over zealous for a protoss :p), he can see the errors in the conclave, is open to new things and does not show prejudice to anyone.
And to top it all off he has already suffered the betrayal that all young and great leaders must face.

If he were dead then wouldn't they say "En Taro Artanis"?
