First Jon says they read almost all of them, which implies it's based on content, then he says a fair drawing should be chosen, which implies a random selection, then he goes on to say that sc2f members shouldn't put too much weight on this contest which implies non-random winner selection. Ookay now I'm confused.

I am gonna guess that the last paragraph is hinting at potential future competitions, but I really don't know much. I would assume that there was some qualifying amount of text most emails reached and after that point it's up to the fates.

haha, but why not take the applications into value? I actually think some people are more qulified then some others but whatever, so is life....
Do you have any idea how many betakeys you will get?
And how many participants were there?
As promised, here is my application:
    Dear "Judge"

Why should I, of all the people, be allowed to play SC2 Beta, might be your
question, and here is my answer:
A game like SC2 consists of two things for me, the gameplay and the community. Some
people only enjoy one of those two things, but I love them both, and I care for them
both, especially the community. And thats also why I am so active on
starcraft2forum.org. But I also care for the gameplay, and as a follower of the SCBW
pro-scene in Korea for more than two years, I am very much qualified for evaluating
    on SC2.
Especially the strategical play that SCBW and SC2 force is satisfying me a lot, but
with the recent changes in the gameplay, which makes it more micro intensive, I feel
that the community has to inform Blizzard that micro very often creates itself, but
that strategical play is a result of a good production. This role as an informant
suits me well – another reason to pick me. And by following the pro-scene of SCBW so
deeply, I will also be able to help Blizzard with small balance changes as +1 dmg on
    the phoenix etc.
But theres one more reason why I want to play SC2 Beta. I want to feel the game, I
want to play the game, I want to feel when my Zerglings are murdering the Zealots,
or when my Marines are shooting on Mutalisks in the middle of the battle. I want to
play the game that I have awaited so long.

    Greetings

    Furrer

Even a 1% chance of getting a beta key is better than 0, so.. WOOHOOOOO hell yeah

VLAN and any online community of people interested in SC2 solves that problem. Given how few beta keys are out there for sc2, I would venture to say there will be far more people playing a cracked version of the beta than the real deal. Given of course that the beta will be reasonably long. There would be little point cracking the beta if Blizz just betas for 2 weeks then releases the game. I suspect someone at any rate will go through the trouble of cracking it, and I see little ethical dilemma in pirating a beta.

On an off note; anyone else left wondering why they even started the battle report nonsense? Since with the way things are going there will be 1 maybe 2 more before release. Seems like wasted effort to me.
