Just a note, the Protoss warp in existing units. The question why the races engage in a battle with only a main building and 6 workers is only valid if you completely disregard competitive play, reliance on skills, and the fun factor, which is impossible. But doubtless lore is all around, and in fact is a decisive (and limiting) factor when it comes to designing new units and mechanics. Overall unit cohesion proves this.

Rushes. They land nearby and rush the *&^% out of settlements and military bases. Battlecruisers and science vessels are infested. Scourge destroy the rest of the fleet. The zerg have a great advantage on the ground, with their zerglings, and are excellent at destroying enemies before they even get their weapons. But when we are talking about defense however...
An entire zerg army was incapable of stopping 8 marines who retrieved a psi emitter from zerg territory in one of the books.

@Kuvasz: Oh so NOW we should ignore realism? It's about suspension of disbelief. That's the important part. Stop overthinking peoplez!!!

i'm rather disappointed that nobody has mentioned the fact that mutalisks fly in space. there are map tilesets on orbital platforms. there are cinematics where they flap their wings in a vacuum.

we got tired of pointing that out a few years ago. There were some threads about it.

The official explanation is that they don't flap their wings in space, they fart in space.

So when did lore all of sudden become so important for gameplay?

The moment you decide to put your game in a universe.

Sure, it doesn't need to be accurate, but it still needs to represent the universe in which it takes place.

    re

    In real life.

There's no way in hell Marines could shoot down a battle cruiser. Their puny guns bullets would bounce right off the hull. And Hydralisks would be ineffective too.

But this is the SC universe.

But...........it would be interesting gameplay if they did make it to where Marines and Hydralisks couldnt attack cruisers but could attack the smaller craft such as Medivac's and Mutalisks.

I wouldnt mind some realism but dont over do it.

I could see a map with this as a principle. Each side has one giant battlecruiser/carrier/behemoth taking up one-tenth of the map. The goal is to take the others ship down.
