How about a zoom feature for the map screen to ease logistics and avoid scrolling around unecessarily. Sure things would look smaller, but then zoom back in creep! I wish I was special...
There's no zoom feature, only pan in & out. And SC2's engine is based on WC3's engine, SC2 doesn't "have a warcraft engine".
considering you can pan the camera all around then I bet you could be able to zoom with a certain key.
I heard somewhere they took out the pan all-around function, and only keep the mouse scroll pan in & out... why limit our views of the Starcraft universe? Zoom would be great! -Psi
In warcraft3 they only really did the textures on the front of the buildings, they had ****ty shody texturing on the back, i'd rather no rotating than that again. I'm guessing there will be a zoom function though
On youtube where they (blizzard) showed us some Terran units and buildings, they zoom AND rotate camera if memory serves me right...
How do you know that? From what I can tell it's a whole new engine capable of handling much much more polygons than what the WCIII engine can.
He put that in quotations. I'm sure you know what that means.. hopefully. Unless he has no idea what he's talking about, then he means it's based on the WarCraft III engine in the same way that the Unreal Tournament 2003 engine is based on the Unreal Tournament engine, and the StarCraft engine is based on the WarCraft II engine. It's a progression of technological techniques and UI interaction ideas but the code and programming is started from scratch. It's almost always better to just start from scratch when you got the most out of old technology. Microsoft should have restarted Window's programming years ago.
Uhm... no he didn't put it in quotation marks. Read my post again. I highly doubt the engines used for Blizzard games have anything to do with each other. Maybe WCII and SC, but to say WCIII's engine is the predecessor of SC2's is stretching it a bit, in my opinion.
why would u need a zoom? if anything they should just zoom it out its better to see more cuz then u can see where everyone is whats going on right then and there D:
The engine will allow you to zoom in, but I don't think it's a feature of multiplayer. It looks "zoomed in" on some videos because units appear closer when you're panned all the way down. It is a completely different engine. It said in a Q&A batch that the two engines are not compatible. Plus they had to start from scratch if they wanted to be able to support a large amount of units. But programmers reuse code all the time, so it's not a stretch to say that the WC3 engine is the spiritual predecessor of the SC2 engine.
Exactly. The reasons are limitless. Why not? But, as far as your suggestion. That's so imba. In custom maps, though, I'm sure they'll have a custom camera like in WarCraft III but much more effective and diverse. WarCraft III could make mini-TPS (Third Person Shooter) viewpoints.. I'm sure StarCraft II will take it a step further. Wrong person. My mistake. I didn't read your quote, actually. I was talking about one of the first posters.
As to the zooming it would be nice, I've found myself trying to use my mouse wheel when playing the original lately for some reason. Though as a few others have said I would probably just zoom out so you could see the most. Maybe zoom in for battles but the truth is my micro is pretty sad, so I may not even bother with that.
I don't think it is a question of whether the engine is capable of zoom, as something like zoom is incredibly easy to implement. If it ends up not being enabled in multiplayer, it will be because Blizzard has deemed it either unnecessary or unfair.
I dont think they'd include the zoom feature for multiplayer. Even if they did, i wouldn't use it because i'd deem it "unnecessary" really. The only thing i'd think of using the zoom is to get a single unit out of a big group because really... what would be the point of watching your men die or watching other units dying. The rotate i would use to get a better angle at a battle or at a base. but still, i lose where i am when i use the rotate so.... put it in but have an option to activate it or not. PS : still watching some units die is pretty fun
