The best idea, IMO, for the ultralisk that i have seen on this forum is giving the ultra a splash attack.
how could you possibly give them splash damage from a melee unit. i can understand with a hydralisk, butmelee units...mehhhhh
are u serious? how could an ultra not have splash? they have HUGE blades/tusks they use. They could easily hit multiple enemies. makes perfect sense...
Maybe they could give it a pseudo-splash attack. In other words, since their blade is so big, they can slash multiple enemies at once. This could be shown in the attack animation, and it would damage multiple enemies (limited to say, four). But it wouldn't be true splash damage.
Splash can be done via Lurker spines already. A lurker-ultralisk hybrid with none of the drawbacks would be where it's heading.

its posts like this that are really short sighted. ITs always the same group of people with the same mentality that love to uses "charging/running/smashing" abilities. Terrible
Perhaps it can also destroy trees in its charge, like in warcraft. Blizzard did say they would make destroyable scenery... But maybe each time it uses the charge, it loses some hp, like marines using stim packs.
Well ihope thay will improve the Zerg ultralisk in order for the zerg to be more stronger and more powerful,, because in starcraft 1 Zerg Ultralisk are very weak against air units i hope they will add more additional ability for it..
The ultralisk doesnt need the stim pack effect (timedragon) coz that would be mimicking a terran unit penalty.. the zerg is a very unique race and they dont rely much on heavy bombardment like the terran or heavy assaults like the protoss but rather by complimenting through masses.. to further discuss this things we should 1st know the strenghts and weaknesses of our ultra-friend + - Carapace Armor Weak attack for his size Huge size and health Ussually just adds traffic to your other ground units Fast enough to travel Food for air units T_T Good tanker Takes too long to access (tech-tree-wise) so base on my analyzation I can say that the zerg's ultralisk lacks several factors thats why he wasnt such a big help and didnt serve his purpose as the main ground badass for the zerg.. so base on his weaknesses maybe blizz can come up with something to cope up for the ultrafiend to be able to stand against the 10yr improvements of the other races... ^_^ ^_^ ^_^ my idea is for the Ultralisks to be an accessible mid tier ground unit like the hydralisk but once a the ultralisk cavern is evolved into a greater cavern maybe we can have 2 different evos for him just like the mutalisk... an option would a ground specialist and an air evolution,,, (now that would be cool) the ground ultra will have a cleaving atk and a leaping ability (in that way he'll kick ass in no time plus the fact that he wont be going circles trying to find a way to get to where his target is...) the air ultra will be an air melee unit with maybe a weapon like a kaiser boomerang thing so that which unit that the kaisers may pass through will be damange.. in that way it will not be a cleaving attack but rather an area of effect.... well those are just some weird ideas from me.. and in the world of forums no one is perfectly right, right??? so i just hope the ultra will make an appearance on SC2 ( they should becoz the other lisks "--muta and hydra--" already promised an appearance ) so we will definitely see him soon...
Just no. Not to shoot you down for the sake of it, but have you really thought about your ideas sober? Leaping units (reapers) generally shouldn't be the size of a house. Cleave attack seems to be popular only because of w3. You can say that Archons had cleave attack, but that was becuase they threw parts of their own psionic matter at the opponant. At least you address that ultralisk has pretty bad pathing due to size and the fact that he's usually accompanied with a swarm of lings/hydras. Kaiser-boomerangs...... sound almost too "stupid" to warrant a try. Maybe it'll look cool, but it certainly does not feel organically alien/monster. ----- Ultralisk is one of those brickish monsters that you can't seem to stop because it's so unearthly tough. Leaping abilities, boomerang abilities sound almost silly for such a juggernaut.
zerg is basically a bug type if you look at it so leaping or climbing may be a possibility and for the boomerangs?? well... yah got me bang! lol ^_^
