Well, the issue of a Nydus worm being able to pop up anywhere on the map, at least in areas you've explored, has been discussed at length elsewhere, but I'd like to offer some additional theories as to what this unit's all about and how it will work. 1.) I agree that I think the Nydus Worm will be able to pop up in the fog of war, right inside an opponent's base. However, I think that the demo was a bit misleading and that it will take a few seconds after the initial pop-up to start spewing out units (long enough to kill the unit with, say, a half-dozen Immortals or Stalkers or a dozen marines at the ready). 2.) I think that the unit is going to be in some sense a Zerg counterpart to the Terran Sensor tower--offering a stunning ability with a few drawbacks. To do this, I think that Blizzard is going to assign a maximum range perhaps similar to that of the sensor tower's radar, or a bit further, to the Nydus Worm. Thus, the Worm will be able to slither right into an enemy base and then spew out units, but doing so will reveal the presence of a fairly significant Zerg base nearby. Adding to this, I suggest that the Nydus worm will initially have to root itself in creep, so you wouldn't be able to make a base decoy out of a Nydus worm quite so easily as you make a decoy out of a sensor tower. 3.) I think that the Nydus worm will be one of the Zerg's method of base raiding. Terrans have two, Banshees and Reapers as I've pointed out on another thread. Protoss have two: Stalkers and Colosses ( plural of "Colossus?" ). So, the Zerg are going to need a way to rapidly ford difficult terrain. One way would be Nydus worm. Another would be some sort of burrowing and migrating unit, or an upgrade to the burrow ability itself.
Re: Zerg Nydus worms: the Zerg counterbalance to Protoss and Terran base-raiding Its Collosi I think youre right on the first point. But I dont think it'd would be able to pop out in places you havent seen. All that pops up in my mind is dread for my Terran base, if some Zerg player speed techs and pops that thing while im still on Barracks :/ Even though I havent seen the zerg tech tree as of yet
Re: Zerg Nydus worms: the Zerg counterbalance to Protoss and Terran base-raiding 1. The Nydus Wyrm is the Zerg's equivalent of the Protoss' Warp In with the Phase Prism, and the Terrans Drop Pod with the Ghost. Every team now has a transport as well as a way of immediately moving units from one side of the map, to the other. 2. It will obviously be not be able to be spawned in the Fog-of-War, just like how you are not able to position new buildings to be in the Fog-of-War. It will be like the Drop Pods and Warp In, in that it cannot be done in unexplored areas. 3. Very little information has been released on Zerg, so it is obvious that the units that have already been presented do not need to have already filled all of the roles in the game. Zerg will obviously have an inter-tier unit like the Protoss and Terran, and almost every unit, if used correctly, can be effective at base raiding.
