Re: Zerg Unleashed Upon the World!

Looking at the screenshots, I am finding myself for the first time, in any game ever, thinking that the graphics look too cartoonish. Why do the Zerg of all races have such bright colors attached to them? I am pretty sure, I think, that this is because they're early textures, that they'll get replaced, but jeeez. It's like the SC1 alpha screens all over!

It seems that the Queen is a ground unit. Hm... and ugly. I personally think it looks a bit to anthropomorphic, centaur-ish... like like a Hydrataur, or something. I don't to possibly-ever mistake that for a human, and I think I might, if I were to look at it from the right angles.

The infestation of the Barrackses looks deliciously gruesome. Will different infested structures produce different infested units? Do different things?

Corruptors on those Battlecruisers. Brutal. Though, does it really take that many to nail them down? That's what I tihnk is happening: those units are maintaining the corruption of the BCs. They seem to be very interesting AA unit. Think of the huge corruptible air units: BCs, Carriers, Warp Rays, Motherships... and Colossi, I bet!

Ultralisks emerging from the ground.... Blizzard is making good on their promise to make each unit feel overpowered, that's for sure. I mean, that is the kind of thing a StarCraft player finds themselves thinking about after waking up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night. That. Exact. Thing. And holy crap, they're bigger too, just to cap things off.

Ok, now I'm getting into the monstrosity that is that list of hi-res screens.

1] Hey, nice view of the Desert tileset! Corruptors are interesting. Not as straightforward as Devourers in dealing damage to enemy units, but more effective against large groups, or against large units. Much more versatile if it works the way it seems it will.

All the creep is purple. There's black creep for the toxic creep created by the Queen.

No no no. The purple fog is the toxic fumes from the Queen. The black creep is non-toxic. ;)

Evidence? All the creep that didn't have the Queen on it were purple, but the ones that did were black, and Queens have the toxic creep ability. Besides, it the purple fog was the thing, they wouldn't call it Toxic Creep

2] On this shot we have two visible new Zerg units: I think the thing spewing the orange stuff is the Infestor, the spidery melee units might be Roaches, though they don't seem to fit the usual description of a roach. Maybe something not covered in what we have?

Lurkers don't seem to fully burrow anymore. Maybe they get an armor bonus when burrowed? It's odd that the Lurker can't burrow completely when we've just seen Ultralisks doing it.

3] The Queen... I thought each race wasn't getting a super unit, and here we are with a huge, single-build Queen.... We call that "super unit" around here.

4] Hydralisk: those are some dangerous-looking blades. It took a while for me to catch this, looking through the other shots, but they do seem to be launching projectiles at enemies.

What's that burrowed in the middle? An Ultralisk? It looks big.

I like that they've made the Zergling reptiloid again. It was strange when it looked like a bug.
5] I love the Drones! I mean, I've always thought Drones were cute (but you all now I'm weird) but now they're just, and yes, I am going to say it, beautiful.

Again, the structures are very stand-out stylized. Again, I am sure it's just because they're still working on the final textures. I mean, the models themselves are distinct and gorgeous.

6] Yes, the Ultralisk is huge. not much else to say about this shot though.

7] Ah, Nydus Worms! We still don't know how they work, but I bet we'll know soon! Whoever these Zerg are attacking had better have some serious firepower, because it looks like they're in trouble.

8] A clear shot of a needle-spine in transit between a Hydralisk and its Zealot target: just to the right of the bottom Gateway, above the two Zealots.

9] What is that structure under the Overlord? There are what appear to be green crystals hovering over it. teach structure? Defense?

Creep is creeping down the ramp. Yes!

10] Oh no, the Medic's heal is still ugly! Someone hear my pleas for change! The Zergling's wings still appear to be just for show.

11] Infested Barrackses, nice Roach corpses. Quite a lot of messy goo being spewed about. Is that Bunker exploding?

12] Woooah. Ok, huge, monster Ultralisks, four of them, on the same screen as huge, monster Thors, also four of them. I note that the Thor seems to be a bit different-looking than before, but certainly still a huge unit.

Let's count: 16 20-foot blades one one side, 24 10-foot cannons on the other. I do not want to be caught between them, that's for sure.

While those Hydralisks are at range... scary flying blades.

13] Zergling-Mutalisk vs some mixed Protoss. Not much to comment on.

14] Another nice demonstration of the Jackal's long-range flamethrower. I mean, come on guys, this is unambiguously a flamethrower. They changed out the railgun before we even got to see it.

Is there anything else to the Roach but its rapid recovery rate? It's otherwise kinda dull in my opinion.

    15] Ah, the last one!

There is a Hydralisk towards the bottom that looks like it's going melee on that tank...

There's another one of those buildings I couldn't place. Who else thinks it's new? I think it's a tech building, and the floating crystals were its research animation.

By the way, the Spawning Pool and Hydralisk Den are sweet. The Hatchery looks like pudding though.

    I don't really remember much from sc1 >.<
but the building you're concerned about, couldn't it be evolution chamber?

UItras got even more horns in place of those ugly team color dots, well horns are better in this case

I don't like that probably infestor thing. It's attack is ugly and covers too much screen, with several of them it's gonna be hard to see anything.
Also it's ugly itself, the top part looks like that octopus boss Arthas fought in Frozen Throne campaign, iirc it also had spikes like these on top

If Overlords still don't take supplies then this creep ability will be quite handy if not overpowered. I mean you could spam creep at all expansions and just starve your opponent...

They need to do that creep expansion thing wherever the Queen goes, not an Overlord. Way to overpowered.

Yeah but then the Queen could create creep on the battlefield and just teleport away when it's low on health... *cough* WCIII *cough*

Any guesses as to when we'll get a high resolution video of the Zerg? I'm talking 1280 version like the other racial footages. I couldn't make out a damn thing in the Youtube version.

I doubt it instantly just teleports, that would be stupid. They probably did that so save time. If it doesn't take a little time it should.

Excellent, was afraid blizz might try to scrap the lurkers, good thing they didnt :)

As for the the queen and other zerg units and structures, they still need some re texturing (just look at the blugy looking drones eek) I dont know what to think about the new units, the corruptor has potential if done right and the roach is just meh.
