It's been like what? 12 years(?) since the first SC was released, now SC2 has quite a bit to catch up on.

First of all despite what Blizzard says about SC2 being strikingly similar to SC1 I really doubt it for the following reasons:
-Everything is bigger, you can probably fit two Ultralisk in one ramp, in SC1 you can only fit 1.
-Practically every unit has a special ability, the abilities are a bit more complex (which I don't mind).
    -More macro focused.
-There's more but I'm too lazy to think up of more

Personally I like SC1 and I'm very looking forward to SC2, it's practically my whole reason to upgrade my integrated chipset to something better (and D3). However I really doubt SC2 can be SC1 no matter how hard Blizzard tries. SC1 is the original franchise which has it's own charm that SC2 WILL NEVER have. Second, Korean progamers are as likely to switch to SC2 as soccer player is to switch to hockey.

I think SC2 would be a bit more successful if it were released earlier, I'm talking about released in 2003. For multiplayer online games to succeed, one of the main reason to help it do so is to have the same feel as their predecessor (like Halo1 and Halo2, SSBM to SSBB). If SC2 were released early there wouldn't be as much significant changes as there were today, and if there were less changes people would probably been more drawn into SC2.

Blizzard says they're making SC2 for Korean demand, but most Korean who plays SC spends a lot of time into it and I highly doubt if they're going to restart almost half way.

I know I might be jumping the conclusion however but I'm very curious on this topic. Either way I love SC2 so far by seeing how it's going to be like.

I think StarCraft 2 has more of a chance in the open market because of the increased exposure over the last ten years to the video game industry.

StarCraft failed to capture its entire audience because it was restricted in its audience. Most of us only found out about it casually and by word of mouth rather than actual marketing. That's what's going to be different this time around.

There is a much larger following for StarCraft than there was ten years ago and I believe the release of this game will draw such a large fan base on release that it will force other markets to accept it (and progamers as well).

Whether the game is as "balanced" or not, the updates and gameplay changes are going to draw the less skilled players whether the pro gamers like it or not. That means their audience will shift to the new game, and therefore, pro gamers will have to switch or be out of work.

bigger in mission durations? yeap a litlte
bigger in cinematics time quality? hell yes!
    bigger in lan-parties success? yeap

pro gamers are 10% of the rest, i think we shouldn't care too much about them!
and blizzard will have options to make both sides happy. i am sure. i dont want to be able to play sc1 pro just to start and play a nice sc2 game.

Starcraft 2 might not be 'bigger' for awhile, but given time, I think it will be close or even more popular than the original. It's only natural, people are going to move to the new game; the casuals, the hardcore gamers, and the pros. Blizzard is really trying to keep the feel and spirit of the original game, so the transition won't be that rough. Plus, watching one of those pro Starcraft II matches going will be so much more epic than watching a normal Starcraft match, with the sleek new look and all =D

There is the slight change that many will not like.

For example, I used to play the pokemon card game, as did many ppl 11-14 years old. However, once the Team Rocket set of cards started coming out, a great deal of them quit playing and the card game was most appealing to the new set of 11-14 year olds. I am included in the first set, did we stop playing cause we grew out of pokemon? No, I'm 19 and I still play the gameboy games. We stopped playing because we didn't like the slight changes in game mechanics.

Point being, No matter how close the second is to the original, it will never have that same feel to it. Many of the SC1 base, will either stay there, or stop playing SC altogether.

I happened to find out about SC, because it was a christmas present when I was 12. I am thankful everyday that I got that present, I wouldn't have been able to play my most favorite game to date. Nor would I be here with you awesome ppl (most of you). SC2 has a much bigger advertising base. So there will be a lot of new gamers, that have never played the original game.

All that said, I think SC2 is going to be a lot bigger. Sure we will lose many from them not liking the new game. Some of us on these or other forums for the game will not like it. However, the increase in public eye will make SC2 bigger then the first.

I do hope that SC2 will at least be as big as SC1.

Unless our world turns into a massive and mindless war, and/or economic collapse or whatever, I see absolutely no reason why it couldn't be bigger:

    - people have now for most of them good internet connection
    - people know what SC is
    - pro-gaming is raising
    - free online multiplayer (correct me if I am wrong)
    - better level editor

Come on, of course it will !

I am working on a community site dedicated to the level editing in SC2, so I do hope it will be... =/

I've corrected your mistake ;) Come on, set unit sizes? Animations? Freely mix racial traits?

The level editor alone will surpass SC.

This is the point of my project: I think the online community will have a lot of fun and will show a lot of creativity regarding the various possible uses of this piece of software! =)

Crazy new melee maps, amazing sceneries, nice cinematics, campaigns with some good storylines, and unexpected mods, and online instant testing, releasing and broadcasting! Yummy! :D

In reality we can only wish SC2 is as big or bigger than SC, this is a question that should be answered in about a year from the release, but until then we can only wish we're right about it.

I really hope you guys are right about SC2 being better than SC1.
What I really want to see once SC2 come out, is for all the haters (art bashers for ex.) buy the copy and play it for hours a week :)

And wow, didn't know you can change unit size, that's awesome.

The war3 editor, will upgraded, and put in the sc2 editor. Which is great. War3 editor is the best editor, but it would help it had some triggers from sc. But sc2 will be as big or bigger than sc. The storyline, you can go pretty much anywhere. Other games you follow the storyline, instead of choosing. Which will make it bigger. Pro sc gamers, will still be pros in sc2. Watch This year's WWI on youtube. But i'll still miss sc. Because of the cool bugs. Like the stacking bugs, and other ones.

From what I've seen and read Starcraft 2 is looking to be 10 times better than Starcraft 1. I won't miss the old Starcraft AT ALL when number 2 comes out.

You won't play SC2 only for its art, you can also enjoy it for its network community features, for the competition fever, or for the joy to have to manage a human base lost on the planet in a ruthless sci-fi world, with aliens around etc. We all have our own ways to enjoy the game. =)

Nothing new here, WC3 enabled this years ago, and "heroes arena" maps are infested of giant dwarves and tiny golems. You have 3D models, you can set the display scale from 0.1 to 10.0, that's it.

You may miss some previous units you loved to use but which are no more in this new sequel. =)

Not everything will be perfect in this new game: you will probably first consider some new tactics as abusive for instance.

I don't think he will. All the scrapped SC2 units as well as the SC units will be in the editor, and I'm willing to bet my money on an official UMS map pack coming out a few months after release that covers the SC storyline (i.e., an exact replica of the game, only in 3D).

    That would be so awesome.

And they should, if they just made a map pack, it really wouldn't be that hard for them.

If you consider the change from 2D to 3D upgraded looks, then yes :D AFAIK from that list only the reaver was subject to be in SC2, which would mean that that's the most elaborate looking. What I mean is all the SC units that were never planned to be in SC2 will most probably look very similar to what they look in SC, only 3D modelled.

You will be using the same pattern for both arms. This means for one arm warmer you will need to keep all of your loose ends on the “right side” of the material and you will be wearing that arm warmer “wrong side” out. I like to clip the alternating color strand (leaving a 3 inch tail) if I know I'm going to be crocheting with only the main color yarn for 10 + stitches.
