It seems to me that Warcraft 3 pretty much beefed up the heroes to the ultimate conclusion. In Warcraft 3 you can have a subpar economy and subpar building strategies and subpar units but have a level 10 hero and dominate a force with a clearly bad hero that is lower level.

Starcraft, to me has always been about large armies fighting large armies. Good strategies and positions and armies (or fleets) can defeat their foes with strategies and not by "leveling" a single unit or hero.

Heroes, I think are popular because they give us focus to a single person or "item." We can make the million marine rush. However, give one of those marines a +3 dmg and a name and WHAM that unit is important and then that unit talks in the story and has a cinematics. For single player versions and those cooky custom games people make heroes are useful. However, I believe they should be kept to a minimum. Starcraft and Broodwar reminds me of Chess. Every unit has a "chance" to defeat the enemy. A zealot can defeat a carrier. How? If the zealot destroys all the enemy buildings before the carrier can defend or destroy your buildings. A carrier should almost win against a zealot force, but its possible. If the person ha a single carrier and the protoss carrier player was slower or bad in strategy can get overwhelmed by zealots.

In single player games I found I did one of two different things with my heroes. Originally I used them as a crutch. I used them to help me win my first games I ever played with SC. Who did not use your heroes the first time around? The second time around (except for the non standard missions - the missions that you did not "build") I pretty much ignored my heroes and just kept them in a "safe" spot. Lets face it, unless you are playing a custom map/mission you never had heroes. In a 1 vs 1 ladder match in Lost Temple no one threw out Felix the hero to help defend or conquerer the enemy. It was my fleet or army vs the enemy fleet or enemy army. Who can gain the better position, micro, macro, and get the most resources.

So who is up for them eliminating the "hero" class except for that rare single player mission or the custom maps/missions?

blizzard has already said no heroes in multiplayer.
as for single player, heroes were not that powerful in sc1, you couldnt send Jimmy off to destroy a base on his own. Zeratul on the other hand should be able to :p
I thought that the heroes worked really well in the single player campaign, if hero units only did slightly more damage then the standard unit than people wouldn't get as attached to them, leading to a less involved story.

I think they should let heros able to carry items and level up (just like in WC3) so the heros would be more distinguished from normal units rather than just having stronger attack and more life points.

no. items stay in WC3. that would make the franchises more similar, rather than more unique to eachother.

Yea, I think the items and whole leveling up thing should stay in Warcraft. I'm glad Blizzard said they won't be using any items or experince points system for heros in Starcraft 2 and they won't even exisit in multiplayer.

Another reason too would be that the addition of Heros in Warcraft 3 changed the gameplay significantly. The sucess of your army versues the enemy army could very well depend how well you microed and used your heros ablities. So yea, I'm glad they are saying out of Starcraft 2.

No, no, no. As has been said many time "This is not Warcraft in space"!

Heroes are fine the way they are, leave it alone.

I like having the starcraft heroes. They make map making so much easier.

Everything about wc3 heros was great except in sc2 i dont think heros should level up or gain experience points. in wc3 there was a 90 food limit, sc2 has 200 so you wont have to worry about the hero dominating the game, especially if they dont level up. I still think items sound pretty cool if you find them in bobs gun shack or something. There would be no creeps to drop them so maybe a shop or something.

Yeah. Okay. WC3 heroes were great. That's why I don't play that game. No strategy, all heroes.

They tried to combine strategy with RPG.... didn't work so good...

    Awesome UMS engine though. ;)

So glad we're not seeing heros in SC2. Aside from the whole Heros as the centerpiece of the whole game it made all the games pretty much the same. How many Farseer/DeathKinght battles have you seen? So boring to watch the same Heros go at it over and over even if the players were very skilled with them.

That's why DotA is so awesome...so many variables so that no two battles are the same

This belongs in WC, but that option should be open for editing in the StarEdit of SC2 cuz I really want to see a DoTA version of SC2.

    Thanks for the lol.

Anyways I loved using heroes whenever the campaigns just gave me the chance. Always provide the boost you need. Jim Raynor in all forms were great.
    Spider-mining 40 damage Vulture? Thanks.
12 damage range upgraded Marine hunkered down in his bunker with 3 buddies? Great.
I don't remember but one hell of a beefed up Battlecruiser? Thank you sir may I have another?

Other mentionable heroes are Fenix (Zealot was better IMO but whatever), Tassadar, Kerrigan (Human and Infested), Zeratual, and any Ghost hero.

yes putting heroes in sc is a really bad idea and i think they should just stay in single player campaigns but no items or experience or anything to do with wc3 stuffs

I was unaware that Blizzard had said much about heros,

are they gone all together? as in not even in campaign and UMS?

i never use em in campaign save for infested Kerrigan and some of the battle cruisers, but nonetheless i don't want the totally gone

Of course there are going to be heroes. Unless they completely got rid of the story line there will be heroes in the Single Player campaigns.

I'm hoping against all hope that Heroes will be non-existent in multi-player melee play.

Raimu, I don't think he's talking about heroes in the campaigns. He just means no "special" units that are produceable in game that are overwhelmingly powerful and limited to one per game like in Warcraft 3.

I'd be all against that myself with the exception of something like the Mothership for the Protoss since it fits thematically.

But I'm thinking, and hoping, that heroes in terms of a narrative will be available to use as part of the story in the single player campaigns.

yea, hero's in the multiplayer online game should be just left to warcraft.
