    i have a i7 860

when i look at my computer properties computer>properties>windows experience index> print detailed performance and computer information

it says that i have 4 cores

however, when i open directx diagnostic tool (dxdiag)

    and

system configuration>boot tab> advance options>number of processors - it only allows shows 2 cores
    available for boot up

i was just wondering where are my other two processors?

    and i do know that the i7 860 uses 4 processors @ 2.8Ghz

I can't answer your specific question, but I was just wondering why it mattered? You obviously have 4 cores, so it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm guessing the dxdiag tool isn't modern enough to detect four cores.

Check out task manager and under the "Performance" tab check how many threads are shown? There should be 8. If there is, there is no issue with your computer/processor.

    somewhere....not sure
maybe its treating the other two cores as a hyperthread instead of actual physical cores... or something like that... as far as i know, dxdiag isnt updated to recognize four cores + hyperthreading

Mine is. And the sources of info you mention, aem, tell me the same thing, so it's probably a faulty install on your end. I wouldn't worry about it though if the processor performs as intended.

Vista and 7 can actually only use 1, 2, or all four cores to boot.

    There is absolutely no difference.

Dunno what's up with the DxDiag though.

Seems like you'll need an expert to get to the core of the problem...

    Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

    Post the dxdiag here, and post the motherboard make and model. Might be a BIOS issue. And please refer to the 4 "processors" as "cores" instead. Saying processors would be that you physically have 4 different processors with 1 core each. You instead of a 1 processor with 4 cores. ^^;

What you described as opening was not dxdiag but msconfig (not the same thing). There may be a 2 core limit on boot. It helps to improve bootup, but that is all. Dxdiag doesn't appear to list the number of cores, only the processor itself.

To run dxdiag=> Windows_logo_key+r, dxdiag. If you have 64-bit windows, click the button at the button that says "Run 64-bit DxDiag," Then save all the data by clicking "Save All Information..." zip/rar the text file and attach it to the post. Instructions on how to zip here. To create a rar file, first download and install winRAR then read this guide here.

Okay, that is seriously weird but it can happen. Enter the BIOS and make sure that all 4 cores are enabled! The system is only seeing two cores. I would wager that the BIOS setting (for whatever reason) has set the number of cores to 2 instead of 4. There are no BIOS updates for this system so... I would enter the BIOS and make sure 4 cores are set.
